So I've started my journey back into film. I posted some time ago about getting a Kodak Box Brownie. I ran some test shots last year and then it took an age to find a scanner to work with my computer set up. I wanted to keep the budget tight so I now how a functioning camera and scannng set up for less than £20.

My first pictures I've put up on FB. These are just the test shots, and when the weather brightens up I'll be out getting some portraits. I'll post them to show how I'm doing.

Test shots can be found at www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151382532439088.491654.46409729087&type=3

Well Gav, I'd say that was a very good start. They certainly have a nice retro feel to them and the camera looks light tight and ready for a second life.

Well done, Nice to see someone else giving a new lease of life to a box camera.

Nice! Was that on 120 film? I've got one Box Brownie, No.2 I believe it says it uses 120 film and I really want to shot with it!

No Box Brownies do take 120 format film.....offering 8 frames of 6x9cm

A fixed shutter speed of 1/50 ish ( can be a little lazy due to age!)

There is also a Bulb shutter mode for long exposures.

Three aperture settings....F/16, 22 and 32.

I'd recommend 400 iso film shooting predominantly "wide open" unless you are lucky enough to have a particularly bright day.

Film is 127 which needs a special spool. You can decant from 120 film. Search Youtube for how to do it.

Do you mean 620? 127 is narrower than 120 whereas 620 is the same film as 120 but on a spool of smaller diameter.

Steve.

A little heads up for all those with a box camera lurking unloved somewhere it's Take Your Box Camera to Work Day on the 28th February

Last year I used my Agfa Clack and since I usually work in dark and dingy rooms I took 4 shots of the places my working day took me.

This was one

Taken as part of 'Take Your Box Camera To Work' Day and as part of my own 52 film cameras in 52 weeks challenge, 52cameras.co.uk.
Since I usually spend all day in a darkened room and the Agfa Clack was loaded with Ilford Pan F 50 I figured rather than take some dodgy handheld shots of a boring edit suite I'd take a few shots of my day. Coffee on my way into work in Munson's my favorite coffee shop in Ealing, then a short editing job at Ealing Studios, home to the famous film comedies of the 40's and 50's and finally a pint in the excellent Red Lion pub, which is just opposite the studios and serve a fine pint of Fuller's London Pride.

Shot on Ilford PanF+, processed by me in Rodinal (1+25) for 6 minutes at 20 ° and scanned using a Nikon Coolscan 9000, with minor tweaks in Lightroom V2

So dig out those box cameras and join in.

That, Nick is reason to buy a Brownie.

If I was nearer I'd lend you one......you could even have a choice of colour...red, blue, black....just so it would match your work attire you understand! lol

It's practically gauranteed to work as there's next to nothing to go wrong with them ....them were the days before electronic shutters!!

My Hawkeye isn't nearly so sharp as Nick's Clack but if you stand far enough away...

Nothing wrong with that shot Steve.....Let's face it they were never designed to be "pro" level but they did allow the masses to become involved in photography.

I'm sure no one will mind some colour results.....Mine will be black and white once I decide which Brownie to use ....Goodf job there's still a good two weeks as i need time to make decisions!! lol-

I still have my box camera, bought for me Christmas 1959. I have often thought it would be nice to try it out again but it takes 620 film which is no longer available.
Great to see the shots on this thread.

Have you got a 620 take up spool in the camera??

120 format film can be respooled onto an old 620 spool without too much difficulty if you have access to a darkroom or changing bag.

Or you can clip down the edges of a plastic 120 spool to fit but you'll still want a 620 take up spool.

Brownie's are great, you can even adapt then for wet plate photography!!

There's load of cool old 120/620 cameras for next to nothing, makes me wonder why anyone buys a Holga. My favourite is the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash, cute little 6x6 bakelite box camera, designed for 620 but you only really need that on the take up side since you can fit a 120 in the film side fine.

Or if you want something a little more British, 6x9 with an eye level viewfinder, Ilford Envoy.

Also try shooting colour film in them, the low contrast look really makes the shots feel old.

Just to add to this,

Jeff if you wish to run a film through it, I have a roll of Fomapan 400 in the freezer which i can transfer onto one of my spare 620 spools and bob in the post to you if you wish......a little free gift so you can give your 1959 Christmas present a new lease of life.

Hopefully you will already have a take up spool in the camera.

That is a very kind offer Asha. I have just looked and there is an empty spool in the camera.
