I grew up in the 50s in Byker Newcastle, not what you would call an affluent area perhaps he did this to show the neighbours that we had a joint of meat for Sunday lunch

When I was a little kid, we lived in a `non-affluent` area too. The walls between the terraced houses were so thin, my Mum once opened the oven door & the guy next door was dipping his bread in our gravy! :LOL:

It made the nasty cheap useless knives I had quite acceptable.
I fought for years with a cheapo set I bought from a well known Swedish furniture and household goods retailer, they tended to tear at the things I was trying to cut rather than actually cut them.

When I gave in and bought some decent knives I also bought a wheel sharpner that works on a similar principle to the one you linked. Keeps them nice and sharp and food preparation is so much easier.
