ive ponced about with a broken leg for nearly 5 years, i done my tib and fib in september 19, ripped my medial collateral ligament at the same time, done it good and proper and unfortunatly they left a 10mm gap at my tibial platau thats gotten worse to the point i needed a total knee replacement, i did have loads of metal work in my leg and the first attempt to take them out resulted in me dying for a whilst as they anaethatised me,vomited under the anaesthetic, stopped breathing, arrested the full works, thankfully got me back, so they took the plates out last year, this time while i was awake...just been phoned by the secretery, how do i fancy going in next tuesday...part of me is made up, part of me my arse has gone a bit, hopefully they will be able to do this one whilst im awake too, i took my phone into theatre last time, put my head phones in and watched match of the day, wonder what i can watch this time...roll on tuesday, il be off work for probably 3 months, im not looking forward to day time telly i can tell ya that for nothing, if i dont make it this time look out for my bird selling my camera gear in the classified :ROFLMAO:

Good luck with it Dave, I hope it goes well and we see a lot of you here in the subsequent 3 months!

Got anything worth having? :P

More seriously, two of my golf buddies have had significant knee work - one has 2 new joints and the other had something injected into the synovial envelope (?). The one with the new knees is back on the course while the other is on a waiting list for replacements - the injection helped a little bit but not enough.

Where I am it seems to be standard to do knee replacements awake. Friend of mine had both done that way. Like you I had a joint replacement involving metalwork but mine was done in one hit. That meant a general as the epidural is time limited and they didn't know how easy or otherwise it would be. You don't have that issue. You really need to have the conversation in advance, if only for your own peace of mind. Don't just rely on them knowing your history. Good luck with it all and hide the TV remote

Well you'll need a new monpod for a start, that can be used as a walking stick while the knee heals (and it's a jolly good excuse to get one) Plus of course a new camera, half an ounce lighter... to "save the knee" Then the fridge will need beer.... and as you'll have to rest up for ages, a helper, an au pair perhaps..... ;) to fetch the beer....
I'll get my coat..

Hopefully they can do it under s spinal block like when I had the metal work taken out BUT they don't always work so they need a plan B, ie anaesthetic, they won't do that without an intensive care bed available ( I spent a week in itu on a ventilator when I died), sods law the hospital ( broadgreen)I'm going to dosnt have an itu but the liverpool heart and lung thats in the same grounds does, so they lend 1 itu bed a month for complicated cases..I'm booked into it just in case, I'm a nurse by trade and a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, sometimes ignorance is bliss, my mates wife is the matron of the surgical team and she's promised to take extra special care of me this time

Best of luck Dave, My wife had a full knee replacement 3 months a go she is doing well. What has definitely helped her is A) her determination and B) she has done all the exercises they set her, as well as going to Rehab classes (both NHS and subsidised private classes)

Ah well cancelled my operation in the pre op , I've marks on my leg caused by my knee brace digging in to my leg, consultant said too much of an infection risk to proceed, bit gutted as I'd psyched myself up but I understand you have to be careful

First really bad thing for me was a separated pelvis on a bucking horse. Don't come down on the saddle horn! There's a stainless plate in there still holding it together. Then my left knee gave out to arthritis and it's now made of steel and wearing out! While being operated on I could hear them talking and feel them pounding on something.. Got no idea what it was. Now with the left one getting ready to go ten toes up, arthritis is wasting the right knee! Was supposed to be recovery in a year with the left knee but took about three years to get back fairly close to normal. I think about it now and that knee got so bad before but I'd learned to live with it, probably should have left it that way.
