Yes
Probably not everybody's cup of tea but for those interested - it's fun to see these two on the same bill.

I know it's a case of headlining different nights (and the third headliner is yet to be announced) but it's got me thinkng.......

Who is top dog or is it a case of watch and see ?

Haven't listened to Iron Maiden since I was a kid but still have all the old Metallica albums on my MP3 player, so it's Metallica for me.

I've never been to a Metallica concert, so may have to book a ticket. Just hope they play plenty of their old stuff.

I lost interest in Maiden after Somewhere In Time, then the whole rock thing after Metallica's 5th album, but have delved back into them both the last couple or so years.
Live, Maiden always satisfied me, although I only saw them 3 times. Metallica only did it for me the once I saw them with Cliff Burton ... after that, maybe only twice, they sounded thin and didn't do it for me
I think the Brits would say Maiden are the kings, the yanks would vote for their guys. The rest of the world is anyones guess; both HUGE brands as much as bands.

Personally , SLAYER are King ;)

Hallowed be thy name remains the definitive heavy metal song for me, so Iron Maiden.

i can't pick between them as both have really delivered for me on a few occasions for Sheer performance and show Maiden, having been in the tent at download the year Metallica "secretly" for all out ballsy metal Metallica, I take it this is sonisphere??

Yeah its Sonisphere 2014... assuming they actually manage to keep the money coming in and hold the event this year!

I've seen Maiden maybe twenty times over the years and 'tallica maybe ten times.

Trouble with Maiden now is that they've almost become a tribute act to themselves. Too many "best of" tours and not enough new material- and what they have put out quickly gets replaced with the old classics again.

I guess Metallica suffer from the same thing, its just that I don't see them so often lol.

Have you seen Metallica are offering a "people's choice" set for Sonisphere? When you buy a ticket you get a voting code to vote for the song you want to hear them play. Of course, the setlist will almost certainly sound just like the one they'd have played anyway, because people will choose the classics anyhow.... and it would be a crime if Seek and Destroy wasn't played :D

So, to answer the question.... as much as I love Maiden, I will only go for one day, not the entire weeked and it will be to see Metallica.

PS Sonisphere 2012 with the Big Four was amongst the most epic gigs I've ever been to! All my faves in one day!

I agree with a lot of the comments on here.

First time I saw Maiden would have been Beast on the Road back in 82 and I dread to think how many times I've seen them over the years. The Monsters of Rock Donnington days (esp 1988) were always special for me.

My first Metallica concert came later although I did see them with Cliff once. Never saw them with Mustaine though.

I would say both bands have reached the stage where they're tributes to themselves and to be fair I would say 90% of the people that go to see them go to see a 'best of' set rather than new material.

I like how Maiden have toured of late with the focus on a certain point in their history and Metallica's idea of the people picking the set list is good.

+2 (and Whiplash) from that era

+1 and 'Am I Evil?' - Yea, I know it's a cover but it's a great track.

Seem to remember Metallica played all of the Black Album.... which wouldn't have done it for me.

Now....if they could give us all of RTL and MOP.... I'd be first in the queue for a ticket!

Metallica for me also. Maiden just dont do it for me im afraid, and the last time I saw them (also Sonisphere), we decided to leave after the first few songs. There is absolutely no way in hell that I would have left before the end of a Metallica set. I will also be trying for a one day ticket next year

As you can see, I *like* Maiden but that Sonisphere performance in 2011 was so dull. They were totally blown away that day by Pendulum :D

Yes, Pendulum were very good....surprisingly so :)

Maiden of course. Metallica's latest offerings have been dire.

Final Frontier vs Death Magnetic?? Really???

Now if you trying to compare Powerslave to Master of Puppets, I'd be hard pushed to call it :D

So The Prodigy have just been announced as the third Headline act.

That's me out then :D
I wouldn't mind seeing Maiden or Metallica again as it's been 20 plus years. I went to a couple of Slayer gigs in 2010 and although enjoyable, I thought their live sound was pretty dire (unless they genuinely concussed my hearing with the first chords - if that's possible). Also, barely seeing anything at Knebworth's Deep Purple reunion, the coach getting stuck in the carpark and the still vivid memory of those drop bogs kinda puts me off revisiting the place :D

How much are the tickets this year?

Weekend plus camping £215? WOW!

£180 without camping

Thats not too bad really, I'd expect to see a good dozen other bands worth seeing added to the bill, which will probably contain over 60 acts all in all.

If you like music, this probably is the cheapest way to see a fist full of world class acts in three days.
