Just wondering who still has their kit lens? I still have mine but am thinking of chopping it in for a prime 50mm but worried I may miss the wide angle range.

I do. I have other lenses that overlap the same range but the KM/Sony 18-70 is optically one of the best kit lenses available. It needs good light but the image quality is perfectly acceptable. So I use it when I'm travelling light.

I still have both mine and use them all the time. I take it you are talking Canon or Nikon though, in which case you might just want some quality glass ;)

Seriously though, the 50mm 1.8 doesn't cost that much. Why not keep both?

Ive got and use my kit Nikon 18-55mm. Ideally I want to replace it eventually. Its not bad, but its not quite as sharp as id like it, but more importantly the front rotates when focusing which annoys me.

Edit;

I intend to replace it with a 28mm/30mm/35mm prime for most stuff, then eventually a 18-200 VR for a walkabout lens.

I still have it, the 18-55 Nikkor that come with the D50.
That lens isn't bad at all, sometimes you can notice it's not a piece of expensive lens, but not that often, and it's pretty sharpif you use it for subjects that it is easy to focus on.

EDIT: yeah, the rotating front element is iritating at time, forgot about that.
I'd like to replace it with either a 17-50 F2.8 Tamron or Sigma 18-50 mm F2.8 or the 17-70 mm Sigma.
Although I'll probably get both eventually, unless I get one of those F1.8 or F1.4 primes.

I've still got my 18-55mm Nikon kit lens.

I did consider trying to sell it and put the money towards another lens or something. But, because its a kit lens, every man and his dog has one and seems to be trying to flog it on EBay! So they're not going for a lot.

I still use it occasionally. It came in useful at my girlfriend's grandparents' golden wedding celebrations. I'd been happily taking a few candids with the 50mm when they decided they wanted some big group shots. I didn't have a lot of room so I was glad to have the 18-55 in my bag, otherwise I'd never have got everyone in frame! :)

I've still got my 18-70 that came with my D70 but since getting the 18-200VR, I don't use the smaller lens much. It stays on the D70 for the missus to use. The extra 130mm reach of the VR lens makes a big difference.

Looks like a lot of people keep their kit lenses then. I have the nikon 18-70 and while its a good lens its nothing on my two faster lenses and I try to avoid using it.

I still have mine but replaced it recently with the Sigma 17-70, really nice lens for the money.

I still use mine, does the job for me :)

I have the 18-55mm nikon kit lens and also the 55-200mm VR, I'd be lost without my kit lens. I'll soon be purchasing the 50mm prime though.

Still got my 18-55 efs I doubt that I will sell it either, though I did buy a 50f/1.8 as well. & I still use the kit lens

My 18-55mm Nikon kit lens is the only one I have so I use it a lot :)

Am hoping to be able to justify the 18-200mm VR at some point, or at the very least get a 55-200mm VR for wildlife shots.

I would almost certainly have bought a 50f/1.8 if it was AF-S.

I got a 28-80mm kit lens with my D70, and it is probably one of my most used lenses :)

I recently bought a Canon kit lens because I had nothing as wide, I don't use it often but it does the job for me.

I have my kit lens (18-55 Canon), and I also have the 50mm f1.8.

I use both.
I wouldn't advise getting rid of the kit lens, unless you really want to pigeonhole yourself. I would reeeeally miss that extra focal length.

I still have my canon 18-55 kit lens and it gets used a lot as it's the one I haven't replaced yet. I'm not sure what to replace it with as a walkabout lens - probably the 24-70 f2.8 L when I feel richer (or christmas :) )

I have mine but have replaced it with the 24-70 (plus 10-20). Still a great lens for the money but found the colour reproduction a bit dodgy in certain circumstances. Use it as a back up only now.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think I'll hold on to it for now, as the resale value wouldn't be much. I'll be getting the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 soon and maybe once I have the money for a 10-20mm I might drop the kit lens then.

Still got mine. 18-135 Nikon. I have to say though, that new 24-70 f2.8 VR is looking mighty tempting. It'd fit a lot better with my current set up, no overlapping, just a little gap.

I still have mine but replaced it recently with the Sigma 17-70, really nice lens for the money.

ditto

I used my Canon one on the 300D for years and the subsequent on on my 400D for a couple of months until the Sigma.

Yes it can be soft but, used correctly and with f8 or f11 then it is perfectly adequate.

Can't speak for the Nikon but I think it is better quality than the Canon?

I still use my Nikon 18-55, and has been said the rotating element on the front can be annoying but i have found it none too shabby although i will be changing it for the 50mm at some point......and I forget how light it is until I use it after the Tamron 90/Sigma10-20 has been on it :)

I've put my old Canon kit lens on my spare 300D now. I haven't used it in about 8 months.
My 30D is perfectly happy with a sigma 10-20 & 50 1.8 to cover the lower range. I rarely need the range in between atm.
