hi all just a bit of feed back required i here all the time about the rubbish kit lenses thet come with cameras but my 18-55 nikon is a cracking little lens any one else think so mike:love::woot:

I don't have the 18-55, but my 18-135 kit lens is pretty nice as well. I use it all the time on shoots (until I get my 17-55 2.8 :)). But I've heard nothing but good things from the 18-55.

Feels a bit cheap and nasty and is a bit cheap - but not nasty. Not used one a lot (Dad's got a D50 and uses the 18-55 all the time) but find it more than adequate. I will admit that I prefer the 18-70 kit lens (as supplied with my D70) - feels nicer and is better balanced (IMO) on the D70. The extra 15mm means there's no gap between the long end of it and the short end of the 70-300 too.

I think the kit lens slating was generally aimed at the canon 18-55 which in all honesty is pretty rubish they have now updated this too the 18-55 IS which by all accounts is much better. The origional kit lens wasn't unuseable as has been said but it didn't compare well with those offered by nikon and other makes and didn't allow the camera to perform to the best of it's abilities. For me it was more of an issue that they were selling it on a semi pro camera like the 30D/40D when it really wasn't up to the job.

cheers guys nice to know i,m not the only tog using a kit lens got a nifty 50 as well but with the crop factor on my camera its a 70 and i dont do much portrait stuff so dos,nt get used much:)

Ive had some absolutely brilliant shots with my kits lens.

Sadly I've now upgraded to different lenses, so have sold it on.

It can be a great lens though!

nope its still a 50

it gets cropped x1.5 which makes 70 when i went to school (is this the full argument or do you just want the half hour)

Glad I got taught better maths than you... 50 x 1.5 = 75 according to my maths (and calcualtor...)

The 30 seconds it took to type that is enough - no argument needed.

Oh - and a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens, whatever the crop factor. A 50mm lens on a 1.5 crop factor body will have the field of view of a 75mm lens will on a 35mm or Full Frame digital body but it will still be a 50mm lens.

The problem with kit lenses are not the IQ, it is the speed and the non-constant aperture that i have a problem with. That with the build quality and the focus ring is right at the end.

my kit lens is great, must have got a good copy

cheers for the maths update didnt have caculaters when i went to school ha ha

yeah i get that its still a 50 but it gets cropped on my dx body (note to self must get an fx body wishing my life away)
