just bought a nikon d3100 with kit lens, when i read a review about camera and lens, it said the 55 wasn't up to the job, but a 35 would be, couldn't understand what that meant,
i am thinking of buying a 55-300 nikon lens, is this lens up to the job
 
bet your loving your new toy, didnt quite understand your thread, what kit lens did it come with?? the 18-55???
and the other lens youre talking about the 18-35 (i think you might be talking about the 35 prime) seems to be a tad more pricy than you average kit lens
id be looking at a 50mm or 35mm prime as these are great little lens and can be used in many ways (plus there very cheap!)

yes it is the 18-55, only had it a couple of days, but i will come to love it,
i am hoping to do anything from flowers to bikesport, don't mind paying the price for 55-300 if it is up to the job, we are of to oz end of the year so want a good all round lens relatively speaking
 
Have a look at the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 as well.
For the love of god avoid the 18-200 VRs, ignore ken rockwell it is a dog of a lens.
 
Test it but buy second hand, you can get it £100+ cheaper on amazon. I haven't tested it but am looking at the Tamron - AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 DI II VC LD as it has some good reviews and is in the same price bracket - it is Tamron's version of AF-S and has VR.
 
try the 50 or 35mm prime while your there aswell, they might not have the focal range but they make up for that in the aperture side of things, + great for a walk about lens (imo) as there super small and light.

yes i'll have a look tomorrow, trouble is we seem limited to where we can go, to try stuff,

i'll try and find out where the kit lens lets itself down, and look at prime lens, was told the 35 is more up to the job

I bought the Tamron 18-270 recently (the older non-PZD version), and while it obviously has some compromises in its design I find it entirely acceptable for all my normal purposes. I tend to use aperture priority set at f/8 to get better sharpness than it would have fully open.
 
This isn't helping my bank balance - what is the long string of numbers and letters on the older version?
 
I got the D5000 and I bought the nikon 70-200 f2.8 VRII, it has taken some fab photos.
Mind you saying that it is on it's second trip back to Nikon HQ with my camera body to be callibrated. It was originally sent back for some focusing issues which they did adjustments on, then the pics seemed soft all over so keeping my fingers crossed this works. Before these issues arose it has taken some fab photos.
 
ah *sucks teeth* you should send your all your lenses and the camera in at the same time so they all get done together.

The lens I bought is described as

Tamron AF 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD (IF)

It's this one but I paid a good bit less (£330) via a commercial EBay seller.
 
i had reserved nikon 55-300 from jessops last night, to be phoned up this morning to say they have put it to one side, but it was the display lens, i said i wasn't interested in my eyes it was second hand, me and the missus was going into town so thought we would pop into jessops to see if we could get some money knocked of with the lens being display model, which we didn't
think was unreasonable, but there was one thing i forgot i forgot to take my invisible cloak off, ebay or amazon here i come

no i didn't try any other lens, i have made various phone calls enquiring about alternative lenses, to fit d3100 and they all say they are good but with no vr,
being new to digital format it sort of boils down to your gut instinct one person says one thing someone else says another, so i have bought a55-300 nikon off of amazon for £80 less than shop price, going by gut instinct,
 
What faults have you found with the kit lens mate?
 
If you are thinking about the 35 or 50mm primes be sure to get the AF-S version (35 been out for a while, 50 allegedly out now) as these will auto focus on your 3100. Don't be tempted by the £100 50mm afd unless you want manual focus only :)

be honest i only used it yesterday and found it pretty good,

i popped for the nikon 55-300 off of amazon couldn't believe the service ordered it saturday night and it came to-day, at £80 cheaper than shop price
 
According to a lot of what I've read, the kit lens supplied is a cut above the usual standard of kit lenses, you should still be able to take some good shots with it.
 
Kit lenses tend not to be desperately dire as they may have been in times passed. Give them a try.
