So I've decided that after owning my camera (400d) about 4 or 5 years now... it is probably time I replaced the kit lens!

I was thinking possibly the Tamron 17-50, can someone tell me what 'VC' means? There is £50 difference between the VC and non VC?

Or..

The Sigma 17-70.

Can anyone recommend any others for about the price of these (or less), or recommend which they'd choose out of the two?

The only other lens I have at the moment is the 50mm f/1.8.

Thanks :)

As Andy says

VC is Tamron's Image Stabalisation in the lens.

I have read on here, some seem to the non VC version, but I think that was down to early VC versions not being that good, I think they have resolved it now - if you have a "search" I think you'll find quite a few threads on the Tamron. It does appear to be a hit & miss if you get a good one, but if / when you do, it's supposed to be very good.

Another vote for the sigma great lens for the money use mine as a walk about and love it

The tamron vc and non vc are great lenses and certainly a step up from the kit lens..sure you will be very happy with it.

Well I've now ordered the Tamron (non VC) :) Oooh I can't wait.
Just have to get my dissertation finished by Friday so I can go out and play with it at the weekend!

Excellent news ...

Can't wait to see your review / some shots with it
