Yes
I'm thinking of replacing my kit lens on my Canon 300D (ok so it's a few weeks until Christmas and i have no idea what i want!). What would you recommend i replace it with? MAX of £300, pref closer to £200, but that's probably unlikely. It needs to be as wide as possible.

Thanks

Well Sigma and Tamron will be where it's at for you then.

I think I'm correct in saying that the 300D, like my old D30, won't accept "digital only" lenses (The kit lens from my 30D doesn't fit it!) so beware of that if this IS the case.

I was intending to try to go for a straight upgrade to the kit lens for the 30D, but have now realised that there's not really the "right" lens in the area for me. (Partly because of wanting to be able to use all my kit on both bodies, so EF-S and DC lenses are out). I'm now looking towards teaming up a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 with a Sigma 12-24mm to get the coverage at the lower end. Trying to find something nice and fast at the 18 - 70mm area seems tricky to me.

Not that I know anything much as I am new here. Ive got a 400D and replced the kit lens with a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro (Canon AF). Was £209.81 inc delivery from Tecno.

Not sure is its going to help you, but ive seen some great results with this lens on a 350D.

I don't think you're right - only the 10D had this restrction. The 300D WILL accept EF-S lenses. The 10D doesnt.

I would recommend u go for the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 or the Tamron 17-35 F2.8-4(now £200, used to be 300) or the Sigma 18-50 F2.8

I'd like wider! :)
and it has to accept normal filters, so the Sigma 12-24 wouldn't be suitable :(

I have the Canon EFS 17-85 IS, Around £300 from Kerso, it's a nice lens and a very good choice though more expensive than the Sigma wcavanagh has.

Witch the 300D will accept digital only lenses so no problem there.

Certainly the 10D wasn't the only one - as I Say, they don't fit on the D30 as the lens protrudes too far inside the camera. Having said that, pretty easy to find someone with a standard 17-55 EF-S to check it out with.

If the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 mentioned above is as good as my Tamron 17-35 f3.5-4.5 then it'll be a cracker of a lens. When they get it right, they get it REALLY right.

SOunds like you need the Tokina 12-24mm then :)

If you want a lens to replace the kit lens then I would recommend the Sigma 17-70 which is available from £216 delivered from cameras2u so within your price range.

Or if you would prefer a constant aperture at the expense of a bit of length then the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is £275 from Bristol Cameras.

Sigma also do a 18-50 EX f/2.8 though it is not listed on Camera Price Buster so you would need to look around for the best price.

If you want something wider to compliment the kit lens then the Sigma 10-20 EX is highly recommended and falls with your price range. The Jessops site has it for £271.34 delivered, and that is where I bought mine for about that price with no problem. Only the Canon 10-22mm goes as wide (without going fisheye), but costs about twice as much.

It has a 77mm filter thread though so while you can get normal filters, they will not be cheap.

Also, if you do buy from either Jessops or camers2u then join Qudico and use their links to the site and you will get a small amount of cashback on the order too.

These have had some cracking reviews. In all honesty if I wasn't looking for something to work with both my current bodies I'd probably go for one of these over that Sigma.

The problem you have if you're looking to replace a kit lens though is that you'd end up looking at two lenses, not one - as there's nothing that goes out as wide as 10 or 12mm to my knowledge that even comes close to the long end of the kit lenses.

i don't think it'll be wide enough on the 1.6x sensor, although it is a great lens.

i have a 350D and replaced my kit lens with the sigma 17 - 70, its a great lens and would deffo recommend it!

Ok, so i've got a new toy now (580ex), so it really is about time i stopped talking about buying a new lens and actually bought one

Now i just need to decide whether to go really wide (10-20 Sigma) or to go longer and be more of a direct kit lens replacement. hmmm.

£300 is the absolute MAX limit as well, lower would be a lot better though as i have other things to buy(!).

ive got a sigma 18-55mm, i had to send it off for calibration but once it came back it was much much better, and cheap too.
