Hi, I'm very lucky in the fact that I have grand parents that travel to America a lot. Some of the stuff can be very cheap compared to England.I have been saving some money so they can do some shopping for me, I would like to expand my very limited photography kit. They need a list of things to look at for me and I don't want to get it wrong with it been a little to far for returns. I have a cannon 40d with a nissin speedlite Di622 and a sigma DC 18-50mm lens. I mainly do portrait photography which I have been told my current lens is o.k for? I would like some thing to use for when I do the odd commerical job. For building photography for example and I would love a fisheye for some fun! Also i would like a ring flash. I don't really know what sort of prices I should be looking at for lease as I am not sure which products I should be looking at. Can any one help me and show me some good starting products and prices. I feel a bit lost when searching the net?!
 
If you do portrait work, then you MUST get the Canon 50mm prime. Either the 1.8, which is stupidly cheap in the US or the 1.4 which is a little more, but is better built.
The 50mm 1.8 is an absolute no-brainer though - it's only 90 bucks at B&H!

50mm on a crop body is just about perfect for portrait work.

B&H is an amazing shop. If they're going to New York, get them in there - it's VAST!
 
Sigma 10-20mm ?

Nifty Fifty - 50mm f1.8

Battery Grip - useful for portrait ?
 
Off camera flash cord might be useful for portrait stuff.
Tripods are very cheap in B&H too.
 
the only real reasons for the ring flash are for macro, granted they offer soft light for portrait work, but then you'd get a cheaper alternative buying a 580EXII (or even 430EXII) with a Gary Fong diffuser for probably half the cost of the ring flash. They are great for macro though.

Aslo, you have to get the Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22, awesome lenses :)
 
Thanks for the help with the shopping list. The sigma 10-20mm have heard some good stuff about it before. Looks like it's going top so far. Any good fisheyes out there??
 
i think you'll find the fisheye a '2 minute wonder' most users do, they take afew pics then it gets buried in their kit, think about it, how many fisheye pics do you actually see in real life, not many ;), however if it's what you want, then the sigma 8mm fisheye for about £500 looks alright, not sure what Tamron equiv. is but i'm sure there's cheaper than the sigma.
