Hi all

just a quickie

would I be better off with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 over the 18-55mm kit lens I currently have .
Doing a lot of indoor stuff at the moment

thanks in anticipation:thumbs:

I'd have both, they are pretty cheap. 50mm can be a bit restrictive sometimes, and 18-55 could be a bit slow.

definately buy both, but try with your 18-55 at 35mm and 50mm to see which distance you prefer. Then buy either the 35mm prime or the 50mm (The 50 will be cheaper)

Worth considering sticking with the 18-55 and getting a cheap flash for indoor stuff? The 50mm will be better in low light without flash, but on a crop body 50mm will give you a very narrow view.

The 35mm f1.8 is a good compromise, all the speed of the fifty but a wider view, at the cost of price, it's around £160 new but worth it :) Maybe not worth if if you don't use nikon ;)

Hi

I am new to photography and have actually bought the 35mm F1.8 as suggested by forum member to use indoor and am very happy with the lens and the DOF it produces.

You must have had a dodgy copy then, mine is really quite sharp at the long end, even @ f/5.6, it is however quite soft at the 18mm end, but it is not crap, it's a cheap kit lens.

The 50mm will be better than the 18-55 at 50mm, but the 18-55 is better at all other focal lengths ;).

I wouldn't want to be limited to just 50mm, but it would be a very useful companion to the 18-55.

Thanks for the replies peeps

I'm using the kit lens a lot more since starting my 52 challenge & struggling a little with lighting, now got a soft cube light box thing with a few lamps etc to try n help .
The particular shot I'm after doing is in a shop which won't have great lighting but flash is not option for this one .Will take a look at the 35mm
thanks again

What about the nikon 18~70 almost pro quality yet only about 100 notes for a mint one
