I`m no expert on kingfishers,do they more or less hibernate during cold spells?

Have not seen our resident birds for some while now and am becoming concerned.

ill get the **** taken out of me for this, lol but they normally head for faster moving streams as they dont tend to freeze and can continue fishing without getting a headache from the ice lol

Sorry had to move it as no pics :)

Erm......these are river birds Ian, two nest up a small stream and two nest way up river.......:)

Seen none for about two weeks now. Might have a wander tomorrow see if I can spot anything untoward.Buggers better be about in the spring.

No worries on moving it, just thought the people knowledgable on birds would see it where it was.........no sweat though.

I hope your right there mate, i`d be mighty pee`d if the mink had nailed them.

Allegedly some birds head out to coastal/estuary waters during the winter?

They do indeed....apparently the reserve near my other half in Bangor is teeming with them at the minute...whereas during Summer you may only get one pair!

They do move about, cloudy waters or ice covered waters see them move. Often see them on my coastal patch checking the rock pools.

Ah well, I shall have to be patient.

However, the otters are back............:clap::clap::clap:

I've seen them zipping along the River Cam, just this last week.

I usually see one or two about 3 times a month (always on the other side of the river, where you'd need a 1000mm+ to get a shot at them) Last year there were not as many as usual, but there is generally a pair of them at least in a particular 1 1/2 mile stretch.

I've found a spot where I am going to stake out this year.

Yep a lot of them move to coastal waters. I see them zipping around right out to the entrance to the open sea at the harbour i live on.
I remember bill oddie saying on the last springwatch that it's what most of them do.

They are back, spotted them today going upstream and then back downstream a while later,before turning up the beck where they nest.................:thumbs:
