Hi All,

I'm on the lookout for any advice as to where may be a good place to spot kingfishers in the Northamptonshire area. I live Wellingborough so the closer the better, but I am prepared to travel, Ideally looking for somewhere accessible as I'd like to try to get some shots this weekend.

Anyone know anywhere ?

cheers in advance.

Might pay to search elsewhere on the internet. I'm sure there are quite a few nature spotting type sites out there that would be able to help your search.

Thanks, Jemini, I actually work in Petrborough so pass Barnwell on a daily basis. I'll check it out.

I thought you needed a special permit to go out and specifically photograph Kingfishers.

As I understood it's OK to happen accross one and take it's photo but going armed is illegal.

EDIT: You do need a permit to photograph but only at or near a nest - how you would know you were near a nest is a good question for me. but there are some good tips at this site http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/ in their photo tips section.

Hi Simon, Thanks for that, Didn;t know anything about permits, seems a strange one.

thanks for the link

The Kingfisher among many other birds is a Schedule 1 Species, meaning any person wishing to disturb (that includes photograph) one of these at or near its nest requires a schedule 1 license. Whether you plan to photograph or accidently photograph one of these birds by a nest, where there isnt an existing hide, would break the law, and you could be arrested and spend some time inside. Esixting hides on nature reserves do not break these rules as they keep disturbance to a minumum.

I have been to Barnwell and know the hide where the KF's are seen, but i didnt see any when i went, was just a passing visit though.

To enter this debate,sober,.....:(.......I know where there is a kingfisher nest within 20 feet of a public footpath, how would this law work if I, non licensed, stood on the bridge and photographed them ?

For the record, I don`t, and it is a very seldom used footpath.

thats a tricky one, as they will be used to people walking past etc, not sure if you would be disturbing them, although i guess if you see them avoiding going to the nest and suspect its because you are there, that could be classed as disturbance ? Is a very emotive subject though.

Thinking about it, the best way to find out is to speak to someone from Natural England or the RSPB, and explain the situation and see what their take is on it. As i guess none of us here are in a position to know 100% ?

:agree: ... and they are one of the species prone to up and leave if they are too disturbed ...

If in doubt ... don't ... :suspect:

:p

Hi Andrew,
Don't know if you are still following this thread, but have you considered Brandon Marsh - south east of Coventry just off the A45. It is run by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and has 5 hides. Just out the front of one of them - the Carlton Hide - :)there are two poles specially set out for Kingfishers and you have a very good chance of seeing them there on a sunny July afternoon. (The hard bit is "sunny"!!)

It is not as far as you might think. I often go to Summer Leys and it does not take me too long.

Thanks Barry, I might give it a try, next time there is a NICE weekend, Cheers

I was at a meeting in Britannia House on Rushmills recently and from a ground floor room at the back we watched kingfishers flying up and down the small stream that runs behind the building.
