I've just got one of these. I'm finding it a bit disappointing. The back light is poor. It's really uneven at the bottom edge. You can see the light pattern on most settings until it is turned down so far it's no good in lower light at all.

Is this normal for these or is it a faulty one? I am used to retina displays but I assumed as this was a 300 ppi one it would at least be satisfactory. It's on the default font and one size larger than the standard size. It's on charge still at the minute so I haven't played with the font settings to see if there are ones that are better.

Anyone else find it took them a bit of time to get used to the screen?

If the led lights are in one place which it looks like on the exploded diagram then it's never going to be able to light the screen evenly.

Will have another look at it when it's charged but I think it's going to be returned.

Not sure how easy it is to see but the bottom of the screen is shadowy.

Changed the font to helvetica which is a lot easier to read. It's on screen brightness 10.

my wife had one and the screen is a bit patchy like that, they are not ipads and you can't compare like with like, I allways think they emulate an old classic paper look from an old book. once you find a good font and settle your eyes in they are a bit special.

I've finally found somewhere to contact amazon to see whether mine is normal. There are a couple of people on the Device forum of theirs saying they have the same issue.

Weirdly the shadowing that was as plain as day yesterday I can't even see really today. o_O

Maybe it takes a few hours for the screen to "burn in" like headphones or loudspeakers?

Is it brand new?

Yes. Brand new yesterday. Maybe they do take time to settle. Never had it before though. Perhaps E Ink displays do need burn in.

How did you get on?

It is an entirely different experience than a normal screen. I can spend hundreds of hours on mine with no issues, but reading even for 10 on my tablet/phone makes my eyes ache. It is lower resolution, amd itidt o feel crisper reading on my tablet, but I find that once you find the right size, font and spacing, it's as smooth as it needs to be, and much more paperlike (which is also less crisp than my tablet).

Are you getting used to it?

Had mine a couple of years and pretty sure it's not like that. Will double check when I get home.

I seem to be getting used to it. The led screen lights when the screen brightness is turned up is noticeable. There is a slight shadow at the bottom of the screen in normal use but I tend to ignore it.
I had it on wider spacing to begin with but I don't need it now. I can only think these screens do need a few hours use either to get the owner used to them or the screen itself bedded in.
