Planning this for part of Mrs mxfuns Xmas, she has the original kindle at the moment. Had a wee play with one this mornin in Tesco, for the money it seems very good.
Was planning the non HD version ,be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Personally i would go for the hd for the following reasons
Screen extra memory and better battery life.

DOnt forget to use the £10 voucher floating around at the moment

I think the Google Nexus 7 is a much better option.

Why? What makes it worth the extra £50? I'm seriously looking into getting a cheaper Android device, just to check it out. But I want cheap and decent, not cheap and horrible. The fact that Amazon are selling the Fire at a loss suggests it may fit the bill.

I think the standard 16Gb Nexus 7 will drop in price before christmas and from what I read the Kindle Fire HD is pretty well crippled by Amazon out of the box (no access to Google Play, Amazons audio books won't work, the thing is set up to use Amazon.com and much of that content is not available in the UK... http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-rev...?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0 ) unless things change there the KFHD is not a good bet.

With the emergence of the 32gb Nexus 7, the 8gb version has been dropped and the 16gb is now the same price as the 16gb Fire HD at £159.

and ad free :nono: The Kindles are also running an older version of Android. Any future Android updates are always going to be available to the Nexus first.

Normal Kindle fire now £99 on Amazon - looking into rooting to get rid of the limitations Amazon have placed on it.

Just in case anyone comes searching it seems rooting it is relatively simple (once you realise the firmware basically makes it a Kindle Fire HD), then you can load the normal play store - check here

That's great news. Been looking at the nexus or kindle fire HD for a Christmas present for my parents. Liked the cheaper price of the kindle but customisation of the nexus.

Kindle Fire HD looking much more attractive now!
