Kindle & Android

They're all micro USB and are all fine with each other - it's a nice, friendly standard!

I've been using my kindle charger (which is in the bedroom) to charge by tablet for ages and it seems okay. For downstairs I use whatever charger we have to charge the tablet, we get through a lot cos I use the tablet a lot for TP and Clash of Clans. I thought that USB chargers all put out the same amount because its the same as charging from a computer, I assume. Doesn't mean its right though.

But out of all the universal charger connections why micro usb? They start to get loose within a month or two.

USB chargers are all the same voltage, i.e. safe to mix and match. Some have higher amperage (current) output though which means faster charging. Plug something into a computer to charge and it'll pull 500mAh unless the device negotiates and your computer allows a higher voltage. Use a wall charger and you can get a 2A fast charger...

Same here, use my android charger for kindle paperwhite, because the cable is much longer. Well, actually my old android charger, the new one has a different fitting device end, so no longer interchangeable.

Strangely enough, my Kindle charger is longer than the Android one.

I have a suspicion that all the manufacturers just stick in whatever length cables are the best value at time of bulk purchase, I have had them all sorts of different lengths. Current android one is so short I can only just plug in on extention lead on the floor and have it reach the phone on the bedside table right next to it, which is stupidly short. It used to be really easy, having a one plug/cable by the bed, charge phone overnight when needed, and swap it to kindle during day when that needed it. I now have little choice but to charge phone via computer as even just a nudge and the short cable takes the phone flying off the bedside table, so it's much safe on my desk plugged into USB port.

...and no, I am tight, I am not buying an extra, longer phone cable

I have a Kindle Paperwhite and an HTC phone and notice that both chargers look the same. Are they interchangeable or would using the wrong one cause damage?

I did google but it all got a bit technical.

The output VOLTAGE is the important thing to note.

If the voltage is different then this will radically affect the power being output by the charger - so if the voltage is higher then you stand a good chance of damaging the device into which it is plugged.

Good point. I just checked the power adapter that came with my HTC and the output voltage is 5v, the Kindle's maximum is 5.25v so I think I'm ok.

ALL USB CHARGERS ARE THE SAME VOLTAGE. Don't worry about it. It's part of the standard.

Yes you probably would be, I assumed they were plugged into the mains and often different devices use different voltages eg 5, 6, 9 or even 12 volts and in those cases using the wrong charger can be catastrophic.

As above, if your charger has a female USB port it is 5v as that's the global standard. Some USB Chargers will be much lower amps (eg 180mah for older bluetooth headsets) so won't charge a tablet but on the whole, if a charger works with a kindle it will work with a tablet.
