Anyone else taking thie young person off to their freshers week this weekend. Daughter had an unconditional offer from Bangor which is about an hour from us, Great I thought. where is she going- Queens Belfast.Hopefully get
every thing in the car that she wants to take, probably have to leave the kitchen sink at home though.so instead of a niceish drive along the A55, its Holyhead, 3hours on Ferry and 2 hours to Belfast.:) May as well stay there a couple of days so ther goes some of my XT2 budget.

It's a good time :)
Sticking around for a day or so is helpful but don't overdo it!
Help with the first food shop and picking up stuff she needs and has forgotten is good too. Normal thing that gets forgotten is an extension lead with 4 sockets :)

My son finished this year and my daughter is in her 4th year, but she is planning on doing her Masters and then a PhD...

I see it from the other side - student support in a university. Few freshers are as street wise as they might pretend and after the first flush of joy, the term can be tough.

Never sure what's best for any individual but knowing that parents are not far away (ie by phone) is usually helpful.

Advice above about first shop / moving things in etc is good but don't overdo the tearful goodbyes ;)

Lad finished Uni last year so been through it before, better half will shed a few tears for sure. Daughter is pretty sensible, Shop is arranged for Sat pm and we say goodbye after that, think its pretty normal for the 2nd/3rd year students to "encourage" parents not to hang about and spoil the party

I know how you feel Nog. I'm taking my eldest daughter up to Manchester Uni tomorrow - she will be reading chemistry. As a Pembrokeshire born and bred 18 year old I think it will be a bit of a culture shock for her - even though she has travelled widely and is pretty independent.

I met my wife whist at Uni in Manchester exactly 30 years ago, which makes you feel old. It really gives a sense though that the wheel has turned full circle.

Ours is born and bred in Denbighshire, been over there a few times now though. Huge step for most 18 year olds and she is excited/worried. She has just realised she has no scales as she loves bakig cakes, added to the list.

I remember being dropped off at uni for the first time. The students union were promoting their nightclub. They stopped each car as it drove into the halls of residence grounds and gave a poster, leaflets and sweets in brown plastic medication bottles (complete with those push-down-and-twist lids). I was in catered halls so didn't take much other than clothes, clock, portable hi-fi, stationery, toiletries, and a few bits of food and drink. Everything else I worked out what I'd need as I went along.

I think you got to let them make thoughs fresher mistakes. Leave them too it. I appreciate it must be a tough thing to do.

Done all that, trouble is, they come back,I had to encourage mine mine to move abroad to finally get rid, they still turn up occasionally though.
Lol I just saw someone on Facebook bitching about her brother eating all her food in the fridge. She's 38 her brother 39 both in the family home! Their poor parents!

My niece is off to Birmingham Uni next week. Don't think she quite realises how interesting 4 other flatmates will be, haha!

our daughter went back last weekend its her last year, she went back early to start her part time job, to get a few hours in before her course starts again, I was thinking she's grown up, then when I drop her off I seen the freshers poster up good job she only up the road in Preston just been up with her food box

My oldest has just left for her first day at Liverpool uni ,mind you she is 50 and has a string of degrees from Cambridge already ,but she just won a scholarship through work to get a BMA .
