Hi,

I have recently come across the website kickstarter.com and impressed with the amount of projects and new ideas on there. I have an idea for a book that I would like to publish one day, but is simply work in progress at the moment. However, when the timing is right, I think this could be a good platform for my idea or any project that requires financial backing.

Does anybody have any projects that they have created and placed on kickstarter, or come across any photography related items on there, that you would like to share on this thread?

Cheers

Manny

Thanks for that, never heard of that fund raising website.

Great idea for the flash as well...

I've backed 5 or 6 kickstarter projects. But none of them were photo related.

There are some interesting photo projects there, but hard to find among the vanity projects. Typical vanity project seems to be someone who has done a 365 and wants to print it as a book and it must be good coz they get loadz of likes on facebook and flickr and for a mere £40 I can get a copy of their masterpiece.

Lol, I sense a touch of sarcasm in your reply.

I'm found down the textbook / novel idea, but won't be ready for at least a year...so got a long time to work on my campaigning / advertising for it. I promise it's no vanity idea though and hopefully will do well.

Apologies MS; I genuinely did not mean my reply to be a sarcastic or barbed comment and in no way meant to imply your project was a vanity one. I like kickstarter very much and am pleased to have helped fund a few projects. The vanity point was a general observation and was in no way aimed at you. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

textbook / novel???
I suppose you've thought of approaching a publisher whose catalogue it might suit? Or were you thinking of self-publishing a commercial press production which needs funding up-front? With the last, though, most likely you'd have to do your own marketing / distribution ...

Lol, no not at all.

I'm liking the kickstarter website as well and will be helping a few projects myself.

I will be posting a thread on here (if allowed to do so), when I'm at the research and launch level. Hopefully, I will get your backing for it...

Thanks for your replies.

I have never written a novel before or a textbook of any kind and it will kind of a mix between the two. It's an original idea that might not suit publishers, so may have to go down the self publishing idea, which will require funding. However, no idea where to begin or start.

I'm at the beginning of my idea and will have to do some serious research!

Kickstarter, Indiegogo, et al are useful tools - but there's a lot of people that use them badly or for the wrong type of project. And a lot of the bad ones are photo book publishing projects. But there are some very good photo projects that are done well and have realistic reward structures, and come for funding at the right point of the project.

Assuming that you will produce the content - your text will need a proof reader who can be a friend whose abilities you trust. Would you be your own editor (do you trust your own feedback)? Might we assume illustrations - vector work / photographs? Can you produce those (CMYK)? Can you design the book yourself (Indesign / Quark)? If you can then the book can go to the printer's as a pdf and you'll just have to fund the printing and binding, and you'll just have to find a grand or two. But you'll still have to market the work & distribute it - that's a lot of time and leg-work.

I will now mischievously suggest that you do it as an e-book! No print costs at all!

Wow droj, you have good knowledge on what is required in to publishing a book.

E-books are the way forward, especially on Amazon.

Would love to be able to actually meet a photographer who has published their own books!

Loads of artists use Kickstarter. I posted about Luke Stevenson's new book in another thread. He was funded by Kickstarter.

Crowd funding is a great way to raise funds if you have an interesting project.

Definitely, is a great way to raise funds for different projects. I guess the majority of people have got bored of the same old, so may have to try and be creative, if I go down the funding route...

No need to be creative, just be sensible..

The best book projects are funding the printing using pre-paid pre-orders having already got the content already sorted and a very thorough budget of the printing expenses - this keeps the window between payment and receiving the reward nice and short. The worst go looking for the money before a shot has been taken with no track record of competence, capability, capacity or delivery.

True...good advice.

Ned to sit down and plan this all out.

Than you, for your comments.
