Yes
I was mulling this over a glass of wine tonight.

Why are so many people on the internet so vehemently opinionated, usually negatively, about almost any subject that comes up for discussion on the internet? Many discussions - though, thankfully not too many on here - descend into generalisations and rather naff insult trading, the sorts of which we wouldn't normally encounter in the "real world".

So, what is it about the internet? :cuckoo:

Opinions are like arse holes, everyone's got one and most of them stink.

Don't know, suppose they feel invisible behind a screen and can say what they want...

Kind of like the people who cut you up whilst driving along the road, they wouldn't do that in the street or in a store but within their car you can't touch them.

Good point.

I was spurred on because, on a legal blog that I frequent, I was dismissed as "chavvy" (among other things) because of my chosen occupation. This from a middle-class, well-educated person. I'm used to insults in my line of work, but I rarely get much to my face - especially not from the sort of people frequenting legal blogs!

As I sat here with my glass of rose, I peered across the lounge, looked at my two degree certificates from Russell-group universities, then pondered on my nice house in cosy suburbia and my beautiful girlfriend upstairs and wondered exactly what was so "chavvy" about my life! And, as I considered a reply, I just thought... "What the hell am I doing, even thinking about it!"

It just seems very strange that so many people go online to toss out childish insults that somewhat lose any impact through a computer screen! :bonk:

another typical chav....... ;)

My dog used to be ten foot tall and the toughest dog in the world - behind a sheet of glass, it's the same with people on the internet, the safety of distance and the electronic barrier let people be the biggest and hardest and most right.

 That is bloody typical of people who just like to show how they are somehow special and better than others .... so you have two bloody degrees? well good for you! Why do you say a 'nice house' ? who's are you comparing it to? and where the **** is cozy suburbia? bet it's not as good as effin Scunthorpe! what's wrong with Scunthorpe anyway ... You say your girlfriend is beautiful! Are you saying that fat people are ugly then? or perhaps you have a thing against black people too ...... Bloody typical, bloody suburban coppers, only think of themselves and slag everyone else off simply because they have only one bloody degree, live in a ****** flat and have an ugly ****ing slag of a wife!

And what the **** is ****ing rose wine ..... what's wrong with lager? :annoyed: :annoyed:

Only kidding :D ....................................... ;)

I think the funny ones are about people personal choice of purchase, where one poster will argue till there blue in the face that there purchase is better.

Apple products seems to provoke these arguments.:D

There was one off-topic discussion I followed on a photo forum [maybe DP Review I think - it was years ago] about getting rid of rats. Best ways to go about it - poison, traps, shooting etc. All very easy going and amiable. Then somebody waded in spitting venom about the cruelty and how they should be left in peace. It got quite nasty.

It has happened here, to a lesser extent. Somebody has made a harmless inoffensive post about, say, something that happened to them and how they responded, only to be torn to pieces out of all proportion to their so-called crime.

It's an interesting point. Does the internet give a disproportionately skewed weight to an angry minority?

No, - but I think it does give a level of anonymity for people to hide behind, and as they, and the person on the receiving end is faceless they perceive no harm done.

Its also far easier to be misunderstood typing on a forum then it is face to face, no matter how many smilies one puts in a post they are never going to replace the nuances of several thousand years developing modern face to face communication

Hmm

It's also a lot easier to avoid a potentially ugly/violent personal confrontation and a smack in the mouth on a forum! I wonder how many people would pick a completely unnecessary fight with a stranger face to face? Some will, but lets not go there.................

Coming from an ex-keyboard warrior, I can tell you exactly what it's about. Being insecure, unhappy about yourself. Perhaps people in real life don't listen... the Internet is the easy, anonymous, safe way to get people to notice you, to cause arguments, etc. I was a keyboard warrior up until pretty recently actually because I was quite unhappy in life, and the Internet was the only way I could feel "tough". Trouble is, looking back, I didn't look tough at all, just like a twit.

Any angst that I give on the Internet now is a genuine mistake or wrong wording on my part - 6 months ago, it was intentional.
