Hi

Does anybody know if the Kenko extension tubes on Warehouse pass through AF and aperture signalling the same as the (much more expensive) Canon ones?

Thanks

Paul

Thanks. About to get a set for the soon to arrive 500mm. 4.5 metre minimum focusing looks a bit on the long side for some things.

Yeah thats huge lol, thats why id love to have both for the track lol

I have been thinking about a set for close up work on the track.

Depends on if theres enough light to triger the AF fuction.

Not quite sure what that means? If the lens has a maximum aperture less than the body's limit (f/8 on a 1D/1Ds or f/5.6 otherwise) the AF will function. How well depends on the available light as there will be some loss using tubes, but that is true of any brand.

Main difference between Cannon II tubes and Kenko is that the latter will not work with EF-S lenses. Nor will the original Canon tubes, though Jessops ones will. Some say the build quality of the Canon's are better though, I have not got the experience to judge on that.

Michael.

Was lifted from the site i linked to, it means the tubes have the connections for AF, which not all extensions use, but add to many, or light to poor in any combination then the AF will stop.

Just the way i am reading there write up.

That price does indeed inc. p&p. It's where I got mine from though as I now only have 1 lens they'll work with I'll probably sell them.

One word of caution. I recall reading a thread about someone who'd used the Kenko tubes with a 70-200 f/2.8 and the weight of the lens had caused the tubes to come apart while mounted on a tripod. They tried the Canon ones (which apprently have a different locking mechanism) and had no such problem. I have no idea if this is something others have come across when using heavy lenses and I've not tried the rings with my 70-200 but obviously the 500 f/5.6 is a much heavier beast so if you do decide to give them a try make sure you've got someone on hand with a safe pair of hands.

Just my 0.02p

THanks for the advice. Just placed the order with Warehouse so missed out on the cheap price. Oops... I would hope they are strong enough to support the weight of a 1D - I always hold the lens on anything over my 24-70 anyway.

One way to find out. See if they snap on the Farnes in a few weeks...

Just over 3 weeks time. We may be a touch early for puffins but it was the only time I could fit around work. Will hopefully be a chance to put the 500 through its paces, hoping it arrives in time.

Just hope the rain hasn't flooded the puffin burrows like it did a few years back.

Paul

shouldnt be too bad for puffins, went last year and there were plenty about, think was the 1st June we went last year, going to be there in a couple weeks so may be there before you, will let you know ! :) should get bombarded by terns again too lol
