Just got me a set of tubes, and I'm a bit surprised at just how close you have to be to the subject.
While they produce a stunning shot, the below shot was using the 36mm tube, and the UV filter was actually touching the screw!!!!!

Using wireless flash, and my Tammy 17-50mm F2.8 @ 50mm.
Tried a few different combination's, but seems I have to be VERY close to the subject.

Can any of you clever chappies advise on how to get a bit further away from the subject?
I also have the Sigma 70-300mm lens........

Cheers, Andy

i carry mine around with me when im out with the 300 + 1.4 extender, just in case something catches my eye when i've not got the macro with me.

I am guessing you were using less the 50mm for the filter to be touching the screw .

Anyways, you can use just about any lens with your ET. The bigger the focal length, the "lesser" the effect will be. Try it with your 70-300mm and you will see that you can get a lot closer to your subject, without getting too close.

At 50mm, you will need to be really close that it would be impossible to shoot flying bugs, going wider than that would most likely cause the front element to touch your subject.

Excellent  shot, by the way.

Its normal, a rule of thumb is that for a 50mm lens you'll need 50mm of extension to get to 1:1

This puts you almost on top of the subject for short lenses.

I put a Kenko 36mm on a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for laughs, and while it was optically superb you were about 1cm away from the front element!

Thanks allot for your advice guys.
I think I'm getting somewhere now

Just been experimenting, and getting great results and a great working distance with the 70-300mm @ 200mm and all 3 tubes.

Here's a quick sample:

Hopefully be able to get outside for a bit over the next few days......
