Critique required Kell's 52 in 22 - week 52. Showcase

That’s a nice picture and well done for getting the tech too. Good take for theme with the sports top, I wouldn’t have thought of that.

All great shots Kell, I think that #2 would have been the best if his hand wasn't blocking his face. I'm going to go and search Rag n' Bone on now...
Thanks Bill,

I preferred it as a shot - just feels more interesting - but wasn't sure the sports top was visible enough. It's a tenuous enough link as it is, I didn't want to make it even harder to spot. ;)

Plus, I had to do more work on the guy in the background to remove the colour as I think he must have been hit by a different spotlight, so I think that played a part in my decision making.

Love these shots and I think you chose the right one.

My wife’s currently hobbling about on an airboot as she’s ruptured her Achilles.
Oh no! That's the third person I've heard of doing this in as many days! Wishing her a speedy recovery.
I have tickets for the Isle of Wight festival in June and am likely to be on crutches after an op, if all goes to plan. I was thinking it was going to be difficult to attend, but you're now making me think I should investigate access. Food for thought, thank you!

Thanks.

Hope your op goes well.

Definitely worth looking into seeing if there’s anything you can do in terms of access.

That’s a great series of shots Kell and you’ve chosen the best one for me. Difficult choice though as I really like them all.

Took my camera down to the beach this morning as we were away at friends on the south coast and I know there's a series of beach 'huts' that have plenty of parallel lines in them.

But it didn't immediately scream parallel at me.

So I thought about emphasising it with reflections.

But actually, the one I liked best shows what happens to two PARALLEL shadows when they hit some steps.

The one you’ve chosen is a very strong image and works beautifully for the theme. I very much like the second too.

Great set Kell, and great commentary. For me the image I like the most is #2. Really striking when processed in b&w.

The more I look at your chosen image the more I like it, creative image

Love your chosen image, my favourite of a great bunch.

Excellent image. Like all of them.

Spot-on theme, Kell. Love the abstract and pattern.

Yes, good commentary. Correct choice.

Great creative image with impact.

Thanks all.

My chosen image was by far my favourite.

I did like number 2 (the B&W) but it was a bit of a cheat. It was a lot of a cheat actually.

As my camera doesn't have an articulating screen, it was almost impossible to see what I was shooting. So rather than lie in wet sand to get the shot, I used that technique where you bring your phone up into frame to create the reflections. As you can see, the reflections are far more defined than in the colour image.

Couple of weeks to catch up before I get three weeks behind.

All iPhone pics.

Week 21 - METAL.

This is a coat hook/towel hook in the showers at work. There are three showers, all identical. but for whatever reason the shadows from the two spots either side create lovely symmetry in this one, whereas they don't in the others. Maybe it's different watt bulbs.

Anyway, I preferred the portrait version. I sat the horizontal a little higher than dead centre as it sort of felt like it was falling out of frame otherwise.

I like them both but No1 is the easy winner for me.

I think it's very nicely observed and taken. Very well done Kell :D

Week 22: Treasure.

There's a reclamation shop a mile or so from where I work. I've not been round there for about 20 years when the old Kings Cross was a little less salubrious. Anyway, the rest of the area has been completely done up, and this one place is a real TREASURE trove of oddities.

not even sure what this was, but I loved the painted numerals. I've given it a heavy vignette as it was taken through a window and you can see my reflection otherwise.

That's another good picture for me Kell and your processing certainly works for this.

Again, very well done :D

You're very welcome.

It's interesting that you vignetted yourself out of the picture. I sometimes include myself or my shadow.

Looks like a fairground font, like you see on the back of waltzers and the like. Well spotted and shot.

I try to keep myself out of shots whenever possible too - saves breaking lenses...

For me, the slightly tighter framed metal shot works best - I love a bit of symmetry!

Yeah - it looked like the type of lettering you'd see on old fairground rides. Too small for a Dodgem, but it could have been a carousel chair or something.

I recently bought Joby Carter's book about hand lettering. It's excellent.

Good idea and good use of vignette Kell.
I think the golden colour of the lettering adds to the theme.

To be honest, I did it because my 'carefully worked out' plan didn't work.

I was wearing a black T-shirt which I thought would help hide a lot of the reflections. So I took maybe five shots where i stood in a different place on each. The hope was that I could merge them all and the black t-shirt would hide EVEN more of the background.

The problem (which is obvious in hindsight) is that LR tries to make sense of all that and produced an image where it merged the various versions of me together too.

Best laid plans and all that.

It's not the worst thing to sometimes include yourself (oneself), but in this instance, i really wanted to focus attention on the numbers.

I'd love to get the opportunity to wander around it when it's open. Always seems to be shut when I'm there.

Now you can see their opening hours! (And that #15!!!)

Metal - great eye Kell, love the symmetry
Treasure - the heavy vignetting makes for a interesting shot.

Two really nice captures. You must be very observant as you always seem to capture something unusual.

Thanks for all the comments.

I think it's horses for courses. Maybe I see shots like these a little easier than I ever see landscapes for example. I'm always impressed by yours, but whenever I try they lack any connection.

I have so many comments to catch up on!!

Briefly.... well spotted with the metal shot. I also like the symmetry and shadows.

You've got a lovely parallel collection, but the zig zags on the stairs is a winner for me - really like that.

Treasure - does looks like a quirky place - reminds me of a fairground.

I agree with Helen, you have a real knack for spotting things!

I shall have to look at that iPhone video as it will probably be a few weeks before I can handle a camera as well as my crutches. I hope your wife is recovering well. I looked into getting disabled access at the IOW festival next weekend and they can make no allowances for people with temporary disabilities/broken bones etc. so it looks like I will be staying home all weekend as I'm currently only up to walking about 100m. :( Oh well, at least I will be off crutches in time, so I mustn't complain.

Shame about IOW. I'm going for the first time this year - though I don't know how much I'm going to see.

Some of my best mates are ex-military and they're coming with us, and I know what they're like when it comes to drinking.

Hope your recovery is swift.

I hope you have a fabulous time. I’m a bit gutted to be missing it, but you have to do so much walking there’s no chance.

I’ve got tickets for another smaller festival in July and I’m STILL going to be on my crutches then. It’s much smaller though, and hopefully I’ll be much more recovered by then.

I’ve just watched the phone video - not what I thought, but a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Loving the shadow on Metal

Treasures colours just jump out at me, love the sign and well captured.

Week 23 - Solid

SOLID effort from this local graffiti artist. Spotted today in Marlow. Obviously bonus points for doing it on Crown Lane.
