Critique required Kell's 52 in 22 - week 52. Showcase

This is very neat Kell, It looks like it's built into the hillside? Or is it a freestanding buildging?

I’ve never come across that building before and will have to have a look next time I’m around there. The first shot shows it off really well.

I didn't go up around the back, but you can. I suspect it's built into the hillside.

It's on the Monsal Trail, so quite a nice walk/cycle.

Week 15: Tree(s)

Not had much time to go out this week, and when I did the light's been very flat.

SO when the sun did actually come out to play for 10 minutes, I managed to grab this in the garden.

But I did go out this morning as there's a pub we've been to in the past called the Yew Tree. Light was flat and just greyed out in the background, so I thought maybe a B&W conversion may suit, with a bit of spot colour.

On the way there, I drove past this tree, in Lane End. I'd forgotten about it even though we used to drive past this regularly.

I'm still not sure what it's meant to be. Teddy Bear, perhaps?

I figured it was unusual enough to trump the next favourite which was the spot colour one above.

You made the best choice.
I think it's a Teddy in the making.

A nice set there Kell.

I agree with the others I think you made the best choice.

That last one is reminiscent of Grayson Perry's bear Alan Measles (if you've seen his Art Club prog on TV), lots of interesting trees around you!

I like your chosen shot. I really hope you will let us know if/when it turns out to be something. I can see Teddy potential there too :)

It's good to see the wider shot to see the scale of it. It can't be easy trimming it.

Thanks, but I suspect we'll all be waiting a very long time.

As mentioned above, it's looked like that for at least 12 years. Never really looked any more like a teddy (or anything else) or any less.

Lovely series of pics Kell. Someone must have a long set of ladders to create that bit of topiary.

I was thinking Gummy Bear rather than Teddy Bear when I saw the shot! 1651096946045.png

That's a huge bit of topiary... I'm really not sure what I would make of it. Interesting shot though.

Good image for the theme. You've chosen the right one IMO.
The grandiose building sets these apart form other Royal Mail holes you see around the country.

Yep - nice letterbox crop chosen :)

I really like the "watering hole" shot Kell. The way you've cropped and processed it gives it a very cinematic look.

To be honest, I wasn't sure what I was looking at with the first image. It wasn't until I read some of the comments that I realized that it was letter drop off.

l really like “Watering Hole”. You’ve captured the atmosphere beautifully.
Of the other two I prefer the close up And it’s very nicely processed.

Watering hole is a great shot. Lovely and sharp, beautiful exposure. I like it a lot. Your chosen shot is also good - more obviously on theme, but erring towards that first one!

Technology - For the chargers image I wonder if the fencing was added as a later enhancement after one was hit by a vehicle? The camera shop image with the woman works best for me.

Discarded - My eye does go to the brightest part, the sun reflection which take me away a bit from the intended item. Although the lighting is working to accentuate the tomato edge so it's not all bad.

Flora - It definitely does what it say on the tub with the colour pop lifting the image further.

Unusual - It's not a familiar sight at all but hopefully one that the tide is turning on.

Snappers Choice - It does look a "blot on the landscape" and soothing that could have been more in keeping with the area. Although maybe that was the style when it was designed and it's function constrained the possible appearance.

Trees - I think the if the hedge was a person it's in need of some fitness and diet advice. It's an interesting shape that's for sure.

Hole - Personally for the first one I want to see the full drinking establishment which is partially covered by the man walking towards the camera. The style for image 2 certainly has holes in abundance.

Thanks Stuart. I did have another version taken a few seconds late, when he was out of shot, but I didn't like it as much.

Thanks Simon and Pete - I quite liked the fact that at first glance it sort of looks like a vignette of two different shots. The yellow warmth of the pub versus the much colder blue light of the street.

Good image for the theme. You've chosen the right one IMO.

Thanks Peter - the building really isn't that grandiose when you see it in its entirety

Yep - nice letterbox crop chosen :)

Thanks Dave

I like the lights and hard shadows in the street shot, along with how much interest there is in it, but I really like the symmetry of the third shot too.

Thanks Nick - I'm constantly surprised (and delighted) with how good that little Canon is: Compact, handheld, at night and it still produces a usable shot.

Plus, I might have been swaying a little bit too...

Week 18 - Sunrise or SUNSET

Checked on TPE and Sunrise is currently pre-5am, so I figured I'd try and go for the other end of the day.

There's no real landscapes within walking distance of me, so concentrated on these first few on trying to get something in the foreground to dirty the frame.

Sundown 3 or the last one would be my choice, so I'd probably avoid using either of those!!! :P

Pretty sure TPE works on GMT so your sunrise is an hour later (according to normal clocks!) 05:36 tomorrow according to my weather app and 05:30 next Thursday. Still OMG it's early! but not as bad as 04:30!

Ah. I didn’t know that.

Either way, I’m unlikely to see either to be fair.

  • Haha
Reactions: Nod
I see both most days, IF they're worth it, I can get to a suitable spot in a few minutes. Here's hoping for one this week!

This is a good set Kell, I'm torn between #1 and #3.

A good group of shots. I rather like the road shot.. it draws the eye right into the centre.

Week 19 - Sports plus tech (MONOCHROME)

Was going to try and get out to take some pics of people wearing SPORTS tops while not playing (or watching) sport. It's a bit of thing of mine to see people just out and about in them - and it seems to be a particularly British thing to do.

Anyway, this sort of fell in to my lap.

Went to the opening weekend of Pub in the Park and Rag 'n' Bone man was playing on Saturday evening.

He's wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers top (no 36) which was Jerome Bettis' number. Bettis was known as The Bus due to his size and running style, which is I guess why Mr Rag 'n' Bone is wearing it.

So that was one tick. But I got lucky with the lighting in a couple of shots where he was lit up entirely in one colour or another. So with only the very merest of corrections, was able to produce full colour, but monochrome images.

Here's my favourite for the submission.

All taken on a Canon G5 X

All great shots Kell, I think that #2 would have been the best if his hand wasn't blocking his face. I'm going to go and search Rag n' Bone on now...
