Critique required Kell's 2023 TP52 - WEEK 52. Shots(s) of the year.

Bit of a catch-up as I was on my holibobs for two Thursdays...

You may (or may not) know that I replaced my APS-C 80D with a fixed lens Sony RX10M4. this has a 35mm equivalent lens of a whopping 24mm-600mm. So it has the ability to make something that's far away appear to be NEARBY.

WEEK 22 - IRREGULAR

Wasn't quite sure what was going on here - I'm guessing it was sailing lessons. But I loved the irregularity of the boats as they were navigating the water.

Especially as to a novice like me watching, they appeared to be identical.

Nearby is a stand-out image, beautiful composition and the crisp white is lovely. Bit of noise in the sky, from processing I presume given ISO 100.

I started with a Fuji HS10 15 odd years ago, loved the 30x zoom on that, and am now finding myself wondering if I'd like to drop the multiple lenses, and reduce the size / weight... Guess kit "wants" go in circles!

Thanks.

Yeah I also still have my FF and all the lenses, but TBH for that type of holiday it’s complete overkill. And my longest lens is still ‘just’ 400mm.

The flexibility of the Sony and an ‘all in one’ approach makes it far more useable for me.

Ultimate image quality is not there - as it’s only a 1” sensor - but for trips where luggage weight and capacity is an issue, then I’m finding it ideal.

Three really great shot Kell, I like them all. Whereabouts were you?

TBH £1000 is not enough as some people think and do get away with it far too often. Mind you Local councils don't help by making trades people pay to visit official tips, but also have to spend mega loads on clearing up flytipping.

One of my mates was a CFO for a refuse company about all the tricks people would use to get around paying to dump waste.

One of them was that you'd get a van load of stuff going in and going through the official weigh station. Followed by a car going through as a householder. The van would have just the driver in it plus whatever they needed to dump, whereas the car would be full of people. And only have a couple of bits in it.

As the commercial vehicle gets charged on weight, before it drove out, two people from the car would get in the passenger seats in the van and the rest would jump in the back. Thereby cutting the weight of four people from the amount they had to pay. The car isn't weighed so it makes no difference to them.

Irregular - simple but really effective shot. I can see it as a wall art pano.
Rubbish - made me smile. Fly tipping in the countryside around me is an ever increasing problem.. they need to be imprisoned imho!

Week 24 Sound.

One of my commutes to work goes fairly close to Abbey Road, so i took a little detour this morning. Cycle commute, so I only had my phone...

Using this as I can’t think of a more famous SOUND studio than Abbey Road.

I don't see this as anything more than a record shot (pun intended)...

But I quite like taking pics of detail

I also quite like taking pictures of people taking pictures. Whenever I've been near, you always see someone doing this - I think this is probably the most recognisable shot for the theme.

Like your chosen shot Kell. It definitely strikes a chord :exit:and makes one think of sounds.

Couldn't resist having a play in PS with it,

Good stuff. Four different blokes with one barefoot was a bit of a stretch I suppose :D

I like it Kell, it looks great and is spot on for the theme.

Great idea for a composite and totally on theme for this week. Well done, nice work.

Week 25: Snapper's Choice

Walking back home the other night I saw the sun streaming through this gate at the British Library and took a shot with my iPhone.

The irony being that I did actually have my 5D in my bag, but i was carrying that, another lens, a gimble for my phone and two tripods. I'd been on my feet all day and was trying to catch a train. In hindsght, I wished I'd done it as the highlights have completely blown on the phone. I preferred the B&W version because I think it takes a little longer to work out that you're seeing the gate and the shadow...

Great subject matter and lighting, really catches the eye. B&W is a good choice for this one. From a technical perspective one could debate the burn out but I think it adds to the shot and atmosphere.

It's a good angle and shot. I think I'd crop to focus more on the shadow half.

I like the warmth of the colour, but the B&W is the right choice for the shot, adding to the 'mystery' as you say.

I think Alan is right about the highlights, adding to the atmosphere and showing the intensity of the light.

Well spotted. I see what you mean about the mono version but I do rather like the warm glow from the brickwork too. Nice one.

Hard to choose between the two for Snappers Choice, I do like the warmth of the shadow on the colour version but distracted a bit by the content visible through the lettering on the left side.

WEEK 26 - WATCHING

Only one this week. Been super-busy at work so not had time to do anything.

Anyone that comments here, please bear with me, I'll get round to reciprocating when I have a little more time.

This is our cat - who was very interested in me taking some shots of the birds on our feeders. Who'd have thought cats liked Bird WATCHING?

Hadn't noticed when I took this, but there's an ornamental cat watching our cat too. So I quite liked that.

Nice kitty pic Kell :)

Really nice image Kell. The "cat watching the cat watching birds" is just a bonus!

Wow.. what gorgeous clear eyes! Nicely captured.

WEEK 29 - Pretty

Been in Croatia - away from the touristy bits. But on the last day we went to Dubrovnik. Don't think I've been anywhere so PRETTY.

Wished I'd taken a 'proper' camera in the end. I took a small Canon G5 X and a larger, but still 1" sensor, Sony RX10.
This was with the Canon.

Good catch up. The leaf for torn has lovely greens in it.

The 'unsightly' cafe is the pick of the three for me. Great b&w conversion, the lada niva(?) hints at the location and the houses nestled on the hill in the trees are fascinating.

Great catch up Kell - We've got a one day stop in Dubrovnik on a cruise later this year. Looking forward to it, although like you I'll "only" have a 1" sensor with me - I use my RX100vi as my travel camera, but it normally comes up trumps.

Nice catch up and looks like a great holiday. My favourite is the unsightly shot... a fascinating collection of "things"

I love the Sony as a travel camera and I think it would have been more suited to the Dubrovnik day.

While both it and the Canon are both 1” sensors, I have a feeling that the physically bigger lens of the Sony must allow it to gather more light - even though the Canon claims 1.8 as its max aperture, while the Sony claims 2.8.

Not tested that theory though.

But as we spent the afternoon kayaking, the Canon’s size won the day as it enabled it to fit in the watertight container stowed on the boat.

Good catch up. Unsightly, looks interesting but would benefitfrom a few days of tidying up.

Pretty, it’s difficult sometimes. I use an iPhone sometimes and it’s great in good light but less than ideal conditions soon shows it’s limitation
