Hiya

I have searched for a thread but couldn't find one, but if anyone knows of one please could they share the link:)

Basically is there a way to upload photos to the web/social media without losing quality?

When I save to PC the image is fine, but once uploaded to Flickr, Facebook and other sites the quality is reduced. I know it can be down to how the site upload photos, but is there a format or way can save it so when they do the quality isn't effected?

Cheers

Which editing software are you using? Knowing that will help us give specific instructions on saving for web use.

Hmm that should work. Some sites do compress the images so quality is reduced such as Facebook. But you shouldn't have problems with Flickr.

Maybe someone else can think of what's happening

Facebook compresses images so you have no chance of retaining the quality of the original.

Flickr also compresses images when it resizes them, but the original which you upload is not compressed. So anyone who views the original will see exactly what you intended, but people who view it at other resolutions won't.

What size are you uploading to Facebook, I think the highest native resolution it supports is 2048 so if you upload at that size at least Facebook won't have to resize

as already stated FB will take a 2048 px image and that would be the best quality for Facebook.. don't about the others off hand. Are you applying any sharpening when downsizing. A little bit helps as the image can get a little soft.

An example would be useful.

What colour profile do you work in? I think some sites may not honour all profiles.

Don't let them resize a large picture - it will sometimes look awful.
Generally try to find the size they display at and upload your picture already downsized and looking as good as possible at that size.
In particular make a version with any sharpening applied as last thing after resizing.
A bit of trial and error is involved, some of them are going to compress it further or even try to *fix* your image by a default sharpening after upload - in which case sharpen less or not at all.

Opposite is needed. Soften the image before scaling to prevent aliasing.
