Keeping it simple

It was always thus for people pictures - one nice big soft light, one reflector, that's it

PS White balance alert!

Lighting - Simple

Everything else - Naaaa...!

Agencies, castings, designers, wardrobe stylists, hair stylists, make up artists, PROFESSIONAL models, talented photographer, good quality consistent equipment, studio hire, contingency plans, probably a pain in the ass Art/Creative Director ;) and some good quality retouching and you're getting there!

I agree wtih Mahoney - i wonder how much of that look comes from the post processing... and then also having a gorgeous model, and all the other things he listed.

On the other hand, if it was a gorgeous model, all the clothes and hair and make-up and props in the world - and then six lights all pointing in the wrong direction - it would look rubbish.

Focus lock - recompose, focus lock - recompose, nice simple shots something im trying to learn lol.

My point was the light is just one factor in the final image, and videos and tutorials along them lines are all well and good, but it can leave people thinking they can expect comparable results with a "myspace model", a speedlight, and a white wall and no post production.

That lighting is a drop in the ocean....an important one, that makes the image, BUT, there is a big effort that goes into making an image of that calibre, before, during, and after a fully fledged fashion shoot which I'm sure you know.

Lol. Good point :)

Agreed, mostly.

The point I was trying to make is, you don't need a shed load of lights to get decent images. The images would not be improved by having more lights.

I may be wrong, but are you inferring that given a plain looking model with no hair and make up team would not look good with one light, but by adding more lights would make it a great shot?

Very much NO, in fact its the opposite of what I'm saying, lol.

There are many many factors that contribute to an image with a final result like those in the video, what I'm saying is, that although one light was used, that's isn't the reason why the final results look so good.

Same lighting + poor model = poor in comparison
Same lighting + poor post production = poor in comparison
Same lighting + poor photographer = poor in comparison

The list is endless...

I'm not saying one light is a bad thing, in fact 99% of my own stuff is shot with one light on a model, I'm saying that by watching a video or tutorial like that, it's easy to make an assumption that those results can be achieved with ONLY the lighting set up, like the lighting set up is the reason them shots are great, and it's not.

I'm not questioning the validity of the post or the video, it's not a dig by any means, at anyone. Just trying to voice another side to things other than..."wow, all we all need now is one big soft light and we can shoot fashion campaigns"

See, I said "I may be wrong" :)

Seriously, I do now see where you're coming from. I just like any opportunity to promote shooting with one light :)

Absolutely mate, true that! I really am all for shooting one light!

You're an eli user too, what's your favourite modifier for one light model shots? I still havent bought the 100cm deep octa but I'm sorta fiending for it lol I love my Eli beauty dish but as they don't do a grid for it I'm sorta unable to use it for most of what I want to do, I think I might get the maxispot to replace it

Same points proved all round here also. I know it's a video, BUT it's beautiful and the quality of the video is amazing, amazing stills could be taken from basically every scene to prove the point just as well.

Natural light only....everybody has it....point one (re:lighting, one light = awesomeness)

Try comparing it to an outdoor scene of eastenders....point two (re:models/styling/post production and so on) LOL

No there's a question! TBH it's a bit boring, but for the ladies, a 135 Octa with both diffusers and a white lolipop, just to even it up further, and for horses it's a 135 Octa but with just the 1 internal diffuser.
Currently though I'm just shooting daylight and with a cali sunbounce.

Why Eli don't make a honeycomb for the beauty dish, I've no idea, I'd buy one tomorrow if they did.

Damn, that's some serious diffusion, lol. Have you used it with just a silver deflector?

You can get a third party grid on ebay but its from the states, so by the time you've paid postage and VAT etc it's just not worth it, and the way it's designed would take my 44cm dish to about 34cm, the rim is massive and impedes on the size.

Having said that, there's a rumour on the net that eli are bringing out grids for the BD's this year....but probably BS.
