Hi

Does anyone own the Kata 3N1-22 or 3N1-33, or preferably both for comparison?

I just recently purchased the Lowepro Classified Sling 220 AW and after receiving it, I've realised it is a bit too big for my liking for when I go on my travels to Japan. There is plenty of room inside, but it is more the one sided sling system that isn't very comfortable, and the size of the bag makes it very hard to swing round easily. The multi sling system is really appealing on the Kata.

My kit is:

40D (no grip)
70-200 f/4 L IS
17-55 f/2.8 IS
Sigma 10-20
50mm mk2
Cosina 100mm Macro
filter wallet + cleaning kit
small flash gun
spare batteries and other bits and bobs like remote etc
Redsnapper tripod
13" Macbook Pro

My main concern when getting the 220 AW was having to fit the laptop in, will a 13" macbook fit in the 3N1-22? Will I be able to fit all of my gear into the 3N1-22 or will I need to get the 3N1-33?

I have a small build so would like as small as possible, but if not then I may have to get the 33. Also, has anyone had any experience with both the Lowepro Classified Sling and 3N1 for comparison?

Thanks

Allen

Hi, it looks like the 3N1-22 is basically the 3N1-20 but with an extra laptop compartment (not sure how big laptop it can fit though), and it looks like I would have to buy an extra tripod holder attachment.

Is the main compartment really small then....? It says on the website it can fit a body with mid-zoom lens PLUS 3-4 extra lenses?

It looks like it is a lot more slimline than the 30/33.....

I have the 33 (with laptop holder) and really like it.

Lately I tend to go out walking with a flask and wooly hat (cos I have no hair) and I find the extra space handy.

In the main compartment in mine is a gripped D700 with 24-70 f2.8 attached, 14-24 f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and two small wallets (Lee 10 filter holder & Lee foundation kit slot in filter holder wallet). There is room in the top compartment for a 70-200 which will be added soon (although I would have to lose the flask) but then it starts to get a bit tight. maybe could queeze ina flash somewhere but that would be it (and very heavy).

Also I have puchased and am awaiting the delivery of the Lee SW150 filter kit to go on the 14-24mm lens so it is only going to get tighter, I may need a bigger bag, but then I won;t always needs everything I have with me.

I wouldn't want to add the weight of my powerbook to that lot and carry it for any length of time. Would also be worried if it fell ... I dunno how much would be in the bag but I'm guessing about £8,000 ish.

It is a lovely bag though, great for waking around with, I woudl only have gone for the smaller 20/22 is I had less stuff than I have now so I would recommend the 30/33.

Don't go for the tripod holder unless you have a very small tripod no bigger that 40cm. I've got a massive Gitzo and it just looks odd and affects the balance of the bag when it is on my back.

Hope this helps.

I have the 3N1-20, the 3N1-22 is the same bag but with a netbook compartment. I think it would be too small for your photo equipment list (ignoring the laptop) so you would need the 3N1-33. Also, I think that the 3N1-22 is only good for carrying a small netbook.

I do like the 3N1-20, the "fastdraw" sling system works very well for me. Also, the X configuration of the straps provides really good stability (I use it when cycling every day).

Thanks for the useful info guys...........it looks like I would defiitely need to get the 33 then.........which apart from being very expensive....looks to be absolutely massive, maybe even bigger than the Lowepro Classified Sling 220 AW that I have just got?! I think for someone with a big build, it wouldn't be too much of a problem, but I'm tiny........I ideally want a bag that is in between the 22 and 33 in size.........

Any suggestions?? I'm tempted to get the smaller version of the Lowepro Classified Sling, the 180 AW and just have both for different situations.....very confused and frustrated right now!

Do you need to have a bag that takes all of your kit or it it mainly for neatness / storage at home ?

If you are tiny then it may be a struggle to carry all that stuff with you wherever you go.

May be just take your telezoom, nifty fifty and WA zoom, leave the mid size zoon and macro one for when you specifically want them with you. The other three lenses will always cover what you need 90% of the time or exchange one for another, carrying five lenses seems quite alot.

kata 103 is better

i found the 3 series hard to get the camera out and now dont realy like the so called quick access bags

The 3 lenses I always have with me are the 70-200, 17-55 and 10-20. 17-55 f/2.8 is my walkabout lens, 70-200 for when I need more reach, and 10-20 for UWA landscapes. The other 2 lenses I can be without, but they are so small and light they almost don't really add anything. I wouldn't really want to leave out any of the heavy lenses because I use them all.

The main purpose for me getting this bag is for when I travel to Japan for a week, and will need to take as much as possible but be able to carry it comfortably and not kill me when walking about.
