Kao's Photo52 - Week 5 - Speed

Thanks for the comments guys.

I tried to pull back some of the darkness in post, but it was juts a bit too underexposed in areas to recover without it getting ugly. Checking my flash when I got home, the settings weren't quite what I'd thought they were. :)

But, I'll be having a go at it again in the future at some point. I did a little write-up about last week's assignment on my blog for anybody who fancies a read.

Anyway, as much was I was really looking forward to shooting Week 4 when I saw the theme, I may have to delay that one a little bit (I'm not jokering or skipping it as I really want to do it, it'll just be delayed). Went to see the Doc yesterday and she had me immediately admitted to hospital for surgery.

Nothing major, I'm out and back home right now (typing this from my laptop in bed), but walking is a bit difficult at the moment, so unable to hit the street and get some photos.

So, as you can imagine I'm pretty bummed out. :(

I like the chopped image, ticks all the right boxes and it's got that nice bit of comedy value. Well composed and exposed too, nice colours. Good job.

I like that John.
Nice idea with the axe. I agree with the comments about it being a bit dark and that a wooden handle would work better, but it’s definitely got potential.
If you do revisit this one at some point, I’d really like to see what you come up with.

I agree with the others - good concept and almost there. Worth reshooting sometime with a better axe and adjusting the lighting.

I like it, it's unusual. A touch lighter maybe ...

Better late than never. After still recovering from Week 4's surgery, I only managed to get Week 5 done yesterday.

So here's my speed image - "Fast Track". Shot through the window of a Virgin Pendolino as it wings its way to Preston.

A bit of a change, as I decided to shoot this one on my Samsung Omnia rather than the D300s. I've been trying to use the phone more to take pictures just to see how good it really is. :)

John, a clear sense of speed here, and this is similar to my first idea, only yours has worked out better. I think the phone has struggled with the exposure a bit, but amidst the blur, I'm not sure that's a problem.

Yup, trying to get the exposure was definitely a struggle. It doesn't lock exposure until you half-press the button (obviously with no way to set it manually, or lock it for multiple shots), but it also autofocuses at the same time, and what I wanted to focus on didn't quite give the exposure I wanted, so it took a couple of goes.

What surprised me most is the fact I managed to hold the phone still & straight to get the horizontal lines of the tracks sharp. It's definitely not a camera holding technique I'm used to. :D

Wow, excellent shot for a phone that. I can remember the omnia having a pretty poor camera so that just makes this shot all the better :) Well done

I've had the Omnia for like 14 months now, and I always hated the camera too, thought it was absolutely terrible. But, after the whole Chase Jarvis iPhone thing, I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try to see if I could do a bit more with it. :)

Seems to have paid off. If you hadn't said anything i'd have assumed that was a DSLR shot

... Either that's a very good shot or my eyes are done for :gag:
