Justlooking's 52 for 2010 - week 52 together - page 18

A nice clean and well exposed product shot. My brushes never look that clean when I'm done with them :) Good luck with the decorating.

I'm sure cleaning the brushes takes longer than the painting .. decorating going along at pace of a snail !

Thats a good choice for transform and nicely composed. So which colour did you choose?

Not decided on the colour yet the ones in the picture were ideas for the chimney brest but I think they are all a bit dark !

technically I am most impressed
your work seems to get better and better each week

not quite sure if there isn't a small crowbar in one corner

but then
I haven't posted anything :embarassed:

it's only a wee crow bar and it's hiding behind the big tin of paint :p

Trying to catch up...

Transform: beautiful clean colours and arrangement, and excellent lighting - you have nailed the white background this time. Good luck with the decorating!

Thank you - decorating is taking forever .. attempting to finish before christmas .. year unspecified :D

A good range of images you have there, i have missed a few (again) :S

Transform: Does what it says on the tin, well done, good lighting, nice product placement (you lose the big tin a bit in the back, but it doesnt hurt the image none)

well done ;)

Thank you

A well-composed image with enough interest to keep the eye travelling round the shot. All that paint - you're going to be busy! I'm curious about which colour you chose, too! :)

Jean

Thanks - colour yet to be decided !

week 33 Mobile - "me and my shadow"

continuing the decorating theme !

Self crit .. clipped the top of the wall bracket and perhaps too much space at the bottom

That must be the most original mobile - ever!:lol::lol:

It really did make me laugh out loud - good job I'd finished my coffee. :D

Yep, you could have done with a bit more room at the top and less at the bottom, but it's still a great take on the theme. Is that a George in the middle? :)

So you chose white? :suspect:

Jean

Certainly the most original subject/image for this weeks theme JL. You've critiqued the image already, so I won't go there, but I like the composition of the image, particularly the shadow on the wall works well. Iain

Glad it made you smile! Ahhh someone else that has heard of George, people at work think I am :cuckoo: when I mention George.

Oh and the ceiling is white .. or at least it will be when I have given it at least one more coat. Still not decided on wall colour.

Thanks for looking Iain, I liked the shadow too and I got to practise my cloning skills as there was another shadow cutting across the image (washing line).

 Huge improvement in your shots these last 2 weeks.

Mobile is really original, and fantastic cloning skills. I can't see where that extra washing line shadow was.
I think you've hit the nail on the head with your own self critique on composition - maybe a crop from the bottom would help.

Transform : I can't help wondering who at Dulux decided that "Muddy Puddle" was an attractive name for a paint colour

Really nicely set up and you've cracked the white background on this one. I think a reflector to the right would have helped to minimise the shadows, but it really does work well.

How's the decorating going?

I've no idea who George is :)

Nice idea for this week. Shame you cut off the top of the bracket as you say, but the idea is sound and the colour in the "mobile" and the shadows are great.

crikey that is GOOD
if you hadn't said you'd cloned out the line I never would have known
(and yes I did go back and look - still can't see it)
you've already mentioned that a bit more space at the top and a bit of a crop at the bottom would have improved it
but exposure, composition - and the shadow - spot on!!!

Cloned shadow goes from bottom left corner up through the third dangly shadow and across to middle right of the frame. I think ;)

That's a clever a idea. What a pity about the bracket. Now that Darren has mentioned it I can see the cloned shadow, but searched for it earlier and could not see it!

I also like your transform image and hope that the decorating is going well.

Thnaks Sarah. decorting going VERY slowly.

thank you .. but George will be devistated that you don't recognise him !

Yip you are right - I obviously need more practise !

Thanks Jenny - decorating is taking far too long .. getting really fed up with it

Poor you - ceilings are the worst thing, imo. I can always convince myself they don't really need another coat! :D It's all the preparation that takes the time though, and once you get to put colour on the walls you're nearly finished! Mind you, it took me nearly a whole day to paint the inside of a cupboard last week. :bonk:

George is very, very handy. :naughty::naughty::naughty:

Look on the bright side - you should have some possibilities for Surfaces for this week's theme.

Jean

Very clever - good colours and I love the way the shadows not only echo but balance the composition. You've already mentioned the crop.

Thnaks Jean, Glad you also find George handy !

Ceilings finally done - 3 coats. Gloss all done (as long as the window sill doesnt need another coat). :)

thanks Tracer

week 34 surfaces

Not one of my better ones but still doing the decorating. Hope to give myself the day off tomorrow so hope next weeks theme it something "outdoors"

 I wondered if we'd get another decorating themed submission this week.
After we've seen all of the bits going into this room, I'm hoping that we get a theme in the next few weeks that let's you take a photo of the finished article.

Enjoy your well deserved day off tomorrow!

As for the shot. Technically there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, well lit, sharp where it should be and good use of DoF. There are some interesting textured surfaces there too.
But I think it would make a much more dynamic image if you got in closer. Really made the most of the wood grain and the surface of the sandpaper.

interesting use of materials
have to agree - slightly closer to show more of the sandpaper
technically excellent - quality seems to improve each week - well done you!

I agree with the others - it's good as far as it goes but try getting in closer.

Mobile made me smile. Certainly a 'different' mobile. I'm still trying to work out what is hanging in the middle though.

Surfaces - agree with the comments about getting in closer. The main piece of wood is a little too central in the frame.

Thanks Sarah - I will experiment with getting closer to the subject

Thanks for the very encouraging comment - will try and get closer

Nice composition and exposure, im with the get in close mob too, the wood grain looks excellent.

Closer seems to be the general opinion - will take this on board in future

Thanks Paul - the "thing" in the middle of the Mobile photo is a "george" .. used when painting eg round a window frame to keep the paint off the glass. :)

An abstract take on this weeks theme JL, I like it. I think if it was symetrical it would be spot on, just a minor niggle though:). Iain

Needs a little more contrast I think and would have been nice to see it shot straight up to keep the symmetry across both planes of the image. Could give you a headache looking at that for too long :)

crikey I like that
a different take on the subject
contrast looks ok to me, too

(I think the slight asymmetry adds to it, rather than detracts)

I like it different angles and an interesting take, only thing i was would say was the symetry (spelling?)

I think a more central viewpoint (i.e. directly under the centre uprights) would also help along with the symmetry.

Well spotted and a very interesting take on the theme. It certainly draws me in and makes me want to keep looking.
I'm glad that you gave yourself a break from decorating this weekend too - I hope you enjoyed it!

I feel like I'm just repeating what's already been said (sorry), but I too would like more symmetry. Bags of potential there, some great angles and I love the clouds floating by outside, but I think shooting straight up would have added an extra bit of wow! to it.

Electric is very simple, yet very effective, nicely done.

Transform, I like the idea, it's worked well.

Mobile, :D another clever idea. It's very good, but just needs that little bit more space on the top, and a little less on the bottom.

Surfaces, an interesting idea, I like it, it's very well done technically. I do agree that getting in closer to get more texture would look better.

Light, now that's interesting. Excellent abstract... I'm in two minds about whether the symmetry works or not, I think it does, but the slight angle in the horizontals is messing with my eyes I'm afraid...

thanks to all for taking the time to comment.

Looks like I may have to go back sometime and try and get a symmetrical image.

Excuses this time .. the orangery was fairly full of people and had a jam and wine stall set up in the middle. Not 100% comfortable taking pictures with lots of people around.

and ok I didn't take enough care with the composition ! :bonk:

Lesson - take more time - think about the result more.

week 36 Project

Can I have the crowbar please ?

Has got to Sunday and still no inspiration.

So here, with use of large crowbar..

Tower projecting out of the ground to project your call though the sky

Or

A little project for someone

I don't think a crowbar is required for these. They are both on theme. The first is a rather clever take on the theme. I must admit that my eye is drawn straight to the lamp post in the second. Pity you did not choose a better angle to avoid it.

Jenny

Thanks for the comment Jenny, I couldn't find and angle to get rid of the lamp post :'( I agree it is very instrusive.

Catch up time for me, JL.

Surfaces: There's a definite diy theme running through your 52 at the moment. I wonder why? I like this - yes, ok it would have more impact cropped in a little, but the end grain in that chunk of wood really stands out. I like the colours too.

Light: I think you could crop a little off the bottom of this to lose the solid part of the frame bottom right, but the symmetry (or lack of it) doesn't bother me. What I do like, however, is the fact that the sky is very blue at the top and fades out to the clouds lower down the picture.

Project: You really don't need the crowbar for this week's shots. Save it for another week (or lend it to me!!) :D Both shots work for the theme. #1 is interesting - I've never looked properly at a comms mast before and there are all sorts of shapes in it. #2 looks like a forlorn and neglected plot of land just waiting for some TLC - a project waiting to happen. It's a law of Nature that lamp posts should position themselves in the way of a photo - can't be helped! ;) :)

Jean

The second shot isn't doing a lot for me, but I do like the first . . . and I have no idea why! A comms mast shouldn't really be very interesting, but  what can I say?

Perhaps it's because it's one of those things you don't see very often that close up. There's something very pleasing about the pastelly sky in the b/g and definitely some interesting shapes at the top of the mast. No idea what any of those bits actually do though

The first shot is excellent... it also projects upwards... and fits the theme nicely. Oddly interesting isn't it...

Not so keen on the second, it's just not really holding me.
