Evening,
Well, I didn't even know this site existed until I was re directed from another on the subject of photography.
Many years ago when I was just a few years younger than I am now and still at school I entered into the World of photography. I was introduced by a teacher named, strangely enough, Mr Slide.
Mr Slide introduced me to a SLR camera and over the years taught me all about shutter speeds and aperature settings and the delights of processing my own black and white film and prints.
Sadly I can not remember the camera I used but it is safe to say that it was completely manual and I recall having to use a seperate light meter to obtain the correct settings. No auto focus in them days !!
I left school and after some years sold everything I owned ( stereo in my bedroom, moped etc) to purchase my very own all singing and dancing Minolta 7000. This was the very latest in technology and was one of the first cameras to have autofocus. Wow, what fun I now had and over the following few years expnded my set up to include filters, additional lenses, flashes, cases and so on.
I used my beloved Minolta 7000 for many years and shot many hundred rolls of film including a huge quantity whilst on safari in Kenya but sadly my life moved on and it was used less and less.
Over the years the popularity of film gave way to the introduction of digital cameras and evenutally the marvellous Minolta 7000 was sent to the back of the wardrobe where for many years it never saw the light of day.
I now have a 12 year old son who, being as curious as kids are, found the Minolta and asked why it was never used. He attached several lenses and, without film, put it through its paces in the garden asking about the settings and their effects on the final picture.
I could feel the old urge to take pictures stir up deep inside me and after looking and handling some different models in Currys etc I found I had no idea what was a good camera and what was a bad camera. Salesman are brilliant and will tell you anything so I did some basic research myself and decided on the Nikon D5100. I wanted something not too basic but not overly complicated. I also picked up the Nikon 55 - 300 lens and all was delivered a couple of days ago.
I found that it was not too different to the old Minolta but some of the settings are somewhat complicated. It does take a lovely picture but I want to become as confident and good at capturing that one picture you always cherish as I once was...... This brings me on to the reason I joined this site. I want some constructive critism on the pictures I post and sensible advice from people that know...... I feel you are the people to help and if I can return the favour with any old knowledge I have retained then you are more than welcome to it.
Thankyou
V
