I'm really into my photography now, doing a degree course at the moment where we're trying out all sorts of medias, genres etc. I'm finding i'm getting into my portrait stuff, which is a change from the landscapes I used to do. I own a 400D camera which I find is more than enough, although my tripod broke recently (was only cheap). So I invested in some new equipment. Through the recommendations here I have bought a redsnapper tripod with tilthead, as well as a BG-E3 grip (i'm a bit worried because I have the silver model, which I thought was cool at the time but now I regret). Hopefully it won't look too strange.
I must admit I get really confused with lenses, I have the kit lens and have just bought the cheap 50mm Canon lens, which I hear is great. I used a 50mm sigma lens on a Nikon at uni and got some great, really sharp results, so i'm hoping this will be good too.
Does anyone have any other things to recommend, equipment-wise? I have my own site too which isn't updated too often, and it's only a simple flash site, but let me know what you think - www. johndurant .co.uk (seperated on purpose as I don't want any spam :))

basic equipment will depend on what you shoot really.

As for the site, It makes me feel a bit sick the way it moves around, great images though.

Don't forget a good bag.

The only thing i' can really recommend until you enlighten us to what it is that you enjoy shooting.

My basic equipment list would be (apart from camera body and lenses):

Tripod
Flash
Remote release
Spare camera battery
Camera bag
Plenty of media cards
Camera cleaning stuff
Photo-editing software
Good monitor to view and edit pics

lenses depend on what you are going to shoot.

filters also depend on what you are planning to shoot.

The equipment suggested already will help and you picked up the 50mm which is a good buy.

re your website. Firstly don't bother seperating links on sites, you'll not get spam from a web address. Secondly, the tilviewer really does not display your images very well. I can see you have some good ones there but the web quality is too low for me to enjoy them and all that moving about meant that I left afte 3 images.

If you're finding yourself getting into Portraits I would recommend a decent flash and a reflector.

I have to be honest, i`m not over keen on the website, it does send your eyes a bit squiffy. When the pictures rush across the ecreen some of them pixelate a bit.

Yeah, it was only a quick website I put together to accompany my course really. I'm taking it down for a while so my friend can put together something simpler :) To be honest I wasn't too keen on it either, but it was quick :D

As for equipment, as I said i'm finding i'm getting more into portrait stuff, mainly studio based. But I also still love my landscapes. I'm hoping the 50mm lens will help with my portraits, although first I need to get my camera fixed. Check my other thread in this forum and you can try and lend a hand with that...
