Have been putting away a bit every week for either a slightly used 1D MKIV or a new 5D MKIII (hadn't 100% decided yet) when this EF 300mm f2.8L IS came up on Ebay a couple of days ago. Went and picked it up this morning, 18 months old, used once, absolutely spotless. Couple of quick test shots and have to say it is the first lens I have had where the raw files don't need any sharpening whatsoever (even shot wide open).

Ah well, time to start saving again, maybe I can think about a new body after Xmas

That's a beast!! What's the front and rear glass look like...

Wow Mike, that's impressive. Sometimes you've just got to go for it.

Great lens. I hired one of these recently and it was an awesome bit of kit. I'm sure you'll really enjoy it.

I could have just about afforded a 400mm f2.8 (infact nearly did in the classifieds) but I just know that it wouldn't have got any use because I'm a lazy git ( as can be seen by the grouting ;) ) and it would just get left home most of the time.

use mine most saturdays to photograph the local cricket, and been over the fields tonight photographing wild fox's, its a bloody heavy thing about 9lb i believe but its worth it :D

From what I have heard about our local cricket team I really don't think it's worth the 5 mins travelling time for me to get to their ground to try the lens. ;)

Now after a Canon 2x to try on it ... more expense :(

Ouch! :D

Pirate is shooting with a Minolta AF 300 2.8 APO HS G, perhaps you should compare length and width.... :naughty:

Took you a while to get over here Eddie :)

Where is Pirate these days, not seen him here or on AV for ages.

Yeah I've been meaning to get out of AVF more, it can be a bit slow at times and I spotted the Alpha thread here, so thought I'd hang out with you CaNikon lot. :D I see you are still hanging on to Pentax though.

Pirate hangs around Dyxum, which I have also just dipped my toe into. I've recently been chatting to him about lenses for aviation and am trying to convince Jim from AVF to sell his 100-300 f4 and TC to me.

However I have been severely tempted by the occasional second-hand Sony 70-400mm G SSM. :cuckoo:

That's one hell of a lens you have.

The Pentax K-5 is the perfect street camera imo, small, excellent low light/dynamic range (thanks to Sony's sensor), inbody SR and some brilliant pancake primes .. so yes, I am still hanging on to Pentax, no matter how bonkers it may seem to a lot of people on here

If Jim will give up the 100-300mm f4 and 1.4x you should buy it in a heartbeat, it's a superb combination but a friend of mine does have the Sony 70-400mm on his A55 and it really is a stunning lens.

Now just waiting for the Bournemouth air show this month to give the 300mm a decent workout ;)

Jim also has the 70-300mm G SSM. I keep prodding him, but he's a canny Scotsman playing his cards close to his chest.

It'll be half the cost of the 70-400mm and I think stopped down to f5.6@300mm it will be fine, but you know when you get that urge for a G (or indeed L)...well I guess you have just demonstrated that you do... :D

Very nice :clap::clap:

It's one of the lenses on my dream list, looks like you've got a belter of a used model there...
