This intrawebbythingy has been around for a goodly while now, and the means by which it can be used get smaller, easier and more accessible practically every day.

It has it's downsides, it's demons....even it's curses; but as I sit here on me todd and a wee bit bored, it occurs to me that I believe the ups outweigh the bad, especially in terms of communication with people from - let's face it - all over the world.

Yes....I rather like the intrawebbythingy.

I started at the other end...
My first use of a computer - when I was studying System's Analysis- was with an ICL 2900 series.
The hard disks, of 256Mb, were the size of car tyres.

The interwebby is a great thing but I think your appreciation of it depends a lot on your age and what else you remember.

My eldest Niece has just completed her first year at Uni 300 miles from her family. It was her first time living away from home. Before she left I spoke to my sister (her Mum) and reminded her that despite her going away, they could always text each other, call each other, face time each other, use facebook and any other means to stay in touch.

When I moved 300 miles away to Uni the only way to keep in touch with my family was by letter or walking to the nearest phone box. Perfect.

I'm pretty much online (be it work or enjoyment) for all the time I'm awake, but when we go to the Cottage up at Loch Sunart I have nothing. No radio, no TV, no internet, no mobile signal (without a wee drive). Just a house phone for use in an emergency. It takes me a day or two to unwind but between photography and fishing I just come away feeling cleansed. It really is like a detox.
 
I had typed up a load of stuff about how music has been changed by the internet, but have decided to just say, "Ruth, thank god you were sitting when thinking!" :D
 
Found it useful over the past few weeks stuck inside at work, on quiet days I can come on here and annoy you lot :p
Other that that I can't say it worries me if I don't have access, rarely use it on my phone unless I am expecting an important email

Totaly agree Phil...i have lived and worked away from home on many ocassions ,especially seeing active service when i was a teenager ,what i would have done then for the internet.....
 
Indeed, the interweb is great. How else am I able to spread my awesomeness from the comfort and relative safety of my hobby room? :D
 
There's nothing bad about the internet. It's the single most significant technological and cultural invention of the past hundred years. It's amazing to think how much harder the dissemination of information across the world was before we could zap files from Syndey to New York in a handful of milliseconds.

We just need to make sure that governments and big business don't manage to undermine, censor and control it, as they are trying their damnedest to at the moment.
 
I have a son teaching English in Czech republic, one at Uni in Dundee, a daughter at Uni in London and up until a few months ago another son who was stationed abroad in the army. I have been able to see them every week and speak to them over facetime or skype and its bloody amazing, I can even do it on my phone anywhere there's a decent signal, its like star trek :).

And of course theres always the porn too :LOL:
 
The thing which amazes me about the internet isn't any of the technical stuiff with computers, memory etc, but the fact that you can communicate anywhere in the world via a pair of wires from your house to the telephone exchange which ia a system originally intended for railway telegraphs in the 1800s.
