Just picked up the Canon 70-200mm USM IS, did I do good?

Hi All.

I currently have the Canon 70-200mm USM IS on rent for a week from lens hire uk.
with the intention of taking it sunday to the Autosport International.

anyhow, my first day of testing the lens... and I'm hooked.
though... only thing is, it got me looking on ebay, and well even though this one has a crack and marks...

I've done a deal with the seller to end the auction early and bought it for £600

did I do well? or buy a mistake?
I'm not worried how it looks, as long as it does the job.

I've been told it's all working, he had it for 3 years and used it obviously alot.
how much would it cost to get it serviced? maybe even that crack repaired?

just curious.
 
looks well used but thats what there designed for and at that price i would say its a good price, i bet you could put it back on ebay and get more than that for it??
 
sorry meant to ask how much was the weeks hire?
 
Great price I say! Looks to be in decent condition really, I'd rather a lens like that, it's proven and someone has obviously relied on it. My old 80-200 2.8L is in far, far worse condition, it must quite literally be war torn!
 
I bought an EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS recently for £650. I'm surprised at the prices being asked on here currently though :'( £975 - 980?
 
I think you may have got a bargain as long as whatever caused the crack has not done ay other damage.
I bought one a little while ago for a bit under £900 (mine does have a 6 month guarantee though) which seemed to be about the going rate for a good one.
If the prices go up in the next week or so you may find its an even bigger bargain!!

I agree.

Make sure the seller agrees to take it back if the optics are not "great".

If a lens has been dropped, the most common effect is for an element to be knocked out of alignment. The symptoms of this are that one edge or one corner of the picture will be softer than the others. There's an easy test for this: pick a target with good, sharp contrast (eg a well-lit road sign) and take five pictures, one with the target in the centre of the frame and one with it in each corner. Then compare them. You'll expect the corners to be a bit less sharp than the centre, but they should all be similar.
 
well it arrived this morning.
seller posted it SD for Morning at a cost.

and it's all boxed, case, and just tested it on the camera seem's to be working perfect, now... I currently have two of these baby's now (one on hire)

so I'll do some more compare test's then send it back early I think.

but I think definitely a bargain at £600.
I missed out on a 24-105mm he was selling at £450 but as I was going through paypals buy it now someone else beat me too it as I was clicking the buy now :(

never mind, I'm much happier with this one!
