I just bought
Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG HSM macro c/w UV filter
Nikon D70 body with 18-70mm kit lens c/w UV filter
Sigma 1.4x DG Teleconvertor
2x 512mb CF cards
lowepro case
all in mint as new condition for £550
it was advertised in the local paper, he wanted £650 for it but I waved £550 under his nose and he couldn't resist
The 70-200mm goes for £500+ on ebay, it's brand new, he dropped one on holiday and the insurance paid out for a new one, he then decided it was too much hassle to take it anywhere so sold the lot
Yes there are bargains to be had out there. I've been collecting second hand cameras for years on e-bay. Now I'm even targeting some early digital cameras in the hope that they might be 'classics' too one day. The good thing is that they are cheap- I rarely pay more than a fiver for any camera.
Here's one of my latest 'future digital classics' the Kodak DC5000. Cost over 500 quid new (2002) cost me 99p ! Built like brick outhouse it was developed by Kodak as a "construction site camera"
TBH I did feel a bit guilty as he was a really nice guy, there used to be some mega bargains about but as 99% of the population have now heard of ebay they're few and far between.
the other side of the story is ebay has all but killed off people part exchanging cameras, I bet jessops have lost millions in profits since ebay started, especially with their PX prices, I bought a digital slr a while back, I didn't want the kit lens so took it down to PX it, it was still sealed in the box, the manager was embarrassed to tell me their PX price £12
