I think I need an idiots guide as this just seems too difficult to get my head around. My canon 550d cropped sensor produces a picture with a ratio of 3.2. I get this part. This if I want a printed picture of 6x4 or 12x8 then no cropping required.

Ok, if I want a picture 10x8 how and what should I be doing in Lightroom 4 to make sure nothing is missing when it's printed. I really need to get my head around this as every tutorial I have seen goes off on a tangent expecting you to know the basics (which I don't). At present I just explain I want said picture 10x8 and hope for the best

Someone please explain

Short of some terrible distortion you can't get a full image from a 3:2 ratio camera. It just doesn't fit. You either have to
A/ Lose some of the image with a crop
or
B/ print on to 8x 10 paper but have the image something like 6½ x 10.

You have to keep the ratio 3:2 an 8 x 10 has a ratio of 4:5 the more oblong ratio of 3:2 just wont fit exactly

When you have your pic in LR, crop it to 10x8 so you are happy with it, and when it is printed it will be as you have cropped it, not how they do it.

It will have to be cropped, so better it is done how you want it to be!

I think this is where I am going wrong. I import the pics into Lightroom but I cannot see where it says what the current size is (other than pixel dimensions) ...will have to take another look. I can crop easily the picture but I think my question should be re-phrased to how can I crop the picture without losing any part of the picture (or would this just distort it and make it look stupid)?

I'm guessing that I will no doubt be cropping an losing s portion which if this is the case will make me think twice when I come to take the picture in the first place. I shall have to play around a bit more in LR

You could print it all without a crop, in which case you would have a white border around it, or crop it and have it full the page. Just decide which option you would prefer for each image.

In Lightroom, go into the print module. Set the paper size to 10 by 8 using the page setup buttom (bottom right). Choose to print borderless if possible. Then in the Template Browser, click "Maximise Size". On the right hand side, go to Image Settings and make sure "Zoom to Fill" is unchecked (you might want to tick "Rotate to fit" so it fills the page best). This will show you how an uncropped 3:2 pic will appear when printed on 10 by 8 paper.

If you then tick "Zoom to Fill" the picture will be cropped so that it fills the 10 by 8 sheet. If you put the cursor over the picture it will become a little hand and now you can click and hold to move the picture around to control what is being cropped out.

In the develop module click on the crop tool and you will see it says 'Original' beside a lock - there is a drop down tab at 'Original' and various crop ratios there eg 6x4, 7x5, 10x8 - and if you keep the lock it will crop to that ratio - you can also put in custom ratios.

But yes, if you want to print 10x8 you need to shoot with extra space to either side (if in landscape, or top/bottom if in portrait) to allow for that. So if you think you might want to crop to print its often best to not shoot too tight in the frame.

Brilliant brilliant thank you thank you all I think I have it now, it cuts off quite a bit really....I need to def think about my pics from now on or just print a different size !!
