Just How Much Is wrong With this shot

To be the selection of photos that make the papers baffle me most weeks when I read the sports pages..
There might not be anything 'technically' wrong with the images.. but does sometimes make me wonder the whether the people at the picture desk have ever worked as photographers.. (conversation I have had at many events with freelancers and Agency photographers).

maybe the only thing wrong with it is someone else took it and presumably got paid for it and the more jealous amongst us didnt!

I doubt if there's any jealousy by working photographers involved in the slightest, whether they be full time or part time.

It's more about the Pic Ed's choice of shot to run with, rather than why the photographer submitted the shot to his agency. As GGB says, and I pointed out earlier, at times that can be an unfathomable mystery.

Well I would assume the guy missed the actual goal (for whatever reason) and had to adjust his position to get the scorer which was probably no more than a snatch shot. Also assuming the scorer then ran off back for the restart and that shot was all he ended up with. Cropping to straighten the shot may have cut too much out so left it as taken. Also may have been under pressure time wise to get the image sent.

Yes, this is probably correct - looking at the full set there is a better image that was most likely taken seconds later after he'd adjusted his camera.

AFP (not Getty) would have put out the shot because it was the best available, rather than not putting any out at all.
