Appalled at the the shallow, cheap antics of the Murdoch empire. 70th Anniversary of D-Day where thousands gave their lives for our freedom.

The film "The Longest Day" (an historical account of the whole invasion, the start of the LIberation from Nazi Europe) is available 'on demand' - at a cost! DISGUSTED (unless they are going to donate the proceeds to a related charity)

Truly - I am ..... DISGUSTED

Not really a true historical account. More a docu drama. But if you feel so strongly you could always cancel your subscription.

Yep... and I tell you, I'm very close to it!

I realise it's not a truly accurate documentary but surely it's shows little respect for what occurred and for the sacrifices given?

I have no trouble with the sale of this DVD.... I have a copy myself.

Just a case of capitalising on a very poignant day..... any other day than D-Day commemoration then I wouldn't complain. This is pure commercialism at it's very greediest!

Hardly a mountain out of a very insignificant molehill. Without these valiant, brave, sacrificial and courageous efforts we could all be speaking a different language.

Whatever happened to respect?

It's a business and it's ran as a business. If they think they can charge and get people to pay, why wouldn't they.

A lot will pay to see that, and it that makes them money.

Agreed - shows little respect in my opinion though. It's how Murdoch works and I for one hate it!

Subscription will soon be out the door

I can't help thinking this is a wind-up.

Me neither.... have you no idea of what these guys went through for your freedom to be able to say what you just have? Or Murdoch to conduct business like this?

You dismissed the Blu-Ray comment. Just to clarify, do you think the retail market should NOT be charging for the disc today? Or is your over the top wrath solely directed at Sky?
Surely ANY retailer that sells a DVD or Blu-Ray of The Longest Day today is "pure commercialism at it's very greediest!".....

No I totally get the respect for our departed and the sacrifices made by them, for us.

But at the same time many films etc have been made about war and they've made their makers millions. I don't see why this is any different.

Murdoch is a businessman, he thinks in a business like way. Charging what he can for his TV, it's what he does. People aren't that interested in wars gone and don't think daily about what happened 70 years back. Sounds callous, but I doubt that many would even bother watching it if it wasn't D day or Nov 11th, then many plastic nationilists will tune in and watch it, and probably pay to view it too on D day/Nov 11th. Other days...doubt it.

Makes commercial sense.

I personally wouldn't have Sky, I am not prepared to pay £40pm plus extra for TV.

Hardly dismissed.... I refer you to post #6

I'm purely saying that on the 70th Anniversary of D-Day charging for this film is showing little respect for the sacrifices made.... just for once Murdoch could stop thinking about making money and start to consider that, in life, there should be some respect and a little humanity. HMV is another case which I'm not debating.

Why? The analogy is a good one. One business is ok to change for it, but another isn't in your opinion?

Somebody call a waaaaaaaaambulance.

It's not the making of the films (although this could be extended into some other form of moral discussion). My point is Murdoch could've made himself a bit more creditable by allowing it for free --- just for once show some honour and respect.... just saying!

So could Amazon, HMV, Tesco and a host of others. Just saying ;-)

OMG I cannot believe the pay for channel National Geographic HD is showing D-Day Sacrifice at 9PM.

I am feeling an all-comsuming rage. HOW VERY DARE THEY!

I think you're missing the point.... I'm just saying on this day, of all days, he could've made it free! Those are shops from which you have to go out and purchase. If you were house bound and wanted to watch it then (instantly?) you'd have to pay for it - well, from Murdoch and advert free..... commercialism at it's worst!

Commemorate rather than Capitalise! Missed opportunity to gain respect - something I've lost for Murdoch (not that I had much).

Cynicism is not becoming of you.... see the disease Murdoch has created?

That makes almost no sense whatsoever.

Ah, so now Murdoch can't charge but National Geographic can? Or should we all be refunded the part of our subscription that relates to today's National Geographic?

The D-day landings were undoubtedly a world-changing act of mass bravery (although a lot of the soldiers had little choice whether they went or not) but the reverence-olympics was getting a bit much today, don't you think? Every media outlet trying to out-care the others.
Did anyone catch that short on Ch4 after the 7pm news tonight? Two ballet dancers dressed as soldiers prancing around in the waves on a beach, all muted colours, while some sombre music played in the background? Unintentionally hilarious.

Simple.... Sky could show respect (commemorate) instead they levied charges - Capitalise.... can't see how that's difficult to make sense.

I've always had a guarded opinion of Sky.... this took it to an all-time low. From this perspective Sky missed an opportunity to gain my respect. Hardly complicated.

Can you imagine the furore if people in America (New York specifically) if there was some form of 'Entertainment' (and I'm frightened to use that term because I'm not really talking entertainment but more in terms respectful memorailising) with heightened charges on September 11th?

Did I ever say that NG are right or wrong?

Did they actually heighten the charges?

CH4 have always been a law unto themselves!

Well, 'on-demand' charges on top of subscription.... similar thing in my book. But you're right - not exactly heightened, sorry.

You didn't moan about them when climbing on your soapbox........

I can only quote from that which I have knowledge.... with hundreds of Channels to watch I have no time, or need, to look for more incongruities!

Did you win the "let's move this into a 'strawman argument' so I can never be nailed down to one topic" at school?

The point is, you have no point. It's been amusing though.

To be fair, the d-day landings paved the road for western capitalism...

Could be - but they also liberated us from Eugenics, Slavery, Facism, Deprivation, Hunger.... etc,.

But there again, without Werner von Braun, would we have Sky?

This is a wind up???

What about Film4 - do they not get your wrath... after all they are selling advertising slots and making money, so just as they land on the beaches and an ad for .... i dunno.... tampax comes on...

Are you forced to watch it? No.

As has been said... no doubt HMV and Amazon sold more copies today than previously... greedy sods! Not to mention the Sun (and probably many other papers) selling more copies with coverage and pullouts and making more money too!

No wind up.

Wouldn't read the Sun, watch TV watch with adverts out of choice ... only got Sky for some sport. Seriously thinking of dumping Sky... This just tweaked my "What bonuses do I get for my loyalties when new subscribers get x,y and z as a sweetener" button!
