just how good is the nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr

hi all,
I am considering this lens in the near future, would like the hear how good this lens is, also considering the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 os which is a little cheaper, any pics taken with any of the lenses would be great.
had a non os version of the siggy and it was great(but was only £400)
thanks for you help.
also how do people find it for weddings.

It's amazing. I love it a lot. cant decide whether that or the D300s is the best thing I bought, but they are both Teh Sexx0rz

i borrowed one for a few hours at an event & i've been yearning for one ever since. absolutely loved it :love:
 
It's one of Nikons best. As is the 24-70mm. Can't see myself parting with either in the near future.

Scott, on a serious note, the lens is superb in every way.But, dependant on what you are going to use it for, can you justify the extra cost over a 80-200 AFD? Only you can answer that.

I have both and whilst the 70-200 is faster AF,I wouldn`t say it is hugely faster.I bought the 70-200 for two specific areas of work, one being weddings.If you intend to do a lot of weddings then go for the 70-200.The VR is a bonus if you want to keep ISO down or your shooting a wedding down a coal pit......:D

JMO I hasten to add.
 
I've got the VR1 version. Sometimes I hanker after the VR2. Gotta say that the VR1 is really great. I use mine for equine events. Focuses really fast, some vignetting but I crop most of my stuff so it's not a problem. Never considered any alternatives. Well happy. Never use the VR for horses BTW. Very happy with it.

Having recently just purchased a VR1 version on here at a sizeable cost, I can say that's it's a corker of a lens to use ;-) I had previously hired out the same lens 3 times for various events(sports, outdoor portraits, general usage) and it's worked very well each time and provided me with some of my best shots to date. Yes it's heavy, yes it's expensive, and yes it might not be everyone's ideal choice for whatever reason, but for those out their shooting Nikon and are looking for a fantastic zoom lens that's super sharp throught and also with VR it's right up there with the best.

Since purchasing this lens, it's made my other lenses redundant apart from specific one's like Macro etc. Twin this lens with the 24-70 f2.8 and you have a killer combo.

As usual I'll disagree, the difference is quite noticeable, depending, of course, on the use...

Same topic that we disagree on Graham, lets not rattle it out again.

Both are good lenses, the finances are the issue to most.

for weddings, the 70-200, end of.............:thumbs:

80-200 is not noisy and is optically as good, but, it is your money to spend as you wish. The 70-200 is a cracking lens, period...............:D
 
If you can afford it, then you will not regret it. I would replace this lens the next day if ever it got damaged.

I know and given the choice, for me at least,the 80-200 wins hands down, it's a total bargain unless you need the VR
 
It's brilliant. I use mine mainly at dog shows and i love it!
 
I have the VR1 version, couple of sames with a 1.7 conveter as well...

If you look at it as it was the best lens Nikon made in that range till very recently then you should be confident that it's good... the amount of people who have one should also be testament to that. I don't use mine nearly enough but I love it when I do.
