.....and it's fantastic :D

I've been holding off for ages but finally caved in when I got an offer from Sky of an HD box for £75. I had it installed yesterday.

Wow  The quality of HD broadcast is astonishing. Couple that with the ability to listen to certain programs in Dolby 5.1 and it's a real treat :D

In fact, it means that DVD is now no longer the best quality I can get. Oh b****r I need a BlueRay player now too

shhhhhhhh don't temp me!!!!

Intersting that you got an offer... They wanted full cost off me :(

How many channels you actually get in hd ?

And of them, how many are just upscaled 720p instead of 1080?

That's interesting, I assumed they had just lowered the price of the box in general  I didn't realise I was so special ;). May be worth asking them if you can get the same deal.

Currently there are 19 channels in HD and that's increasing to 26 next month. 'fraid I don't know if any of them are upscaled but they all look pretty damn good to me :)

Go for it Brian, you won't be disappointed mate. It's great fun flicking between a program in HD and it's normal broadcast to see the difference

shall I tell them that my good friend Paul from reading is paying for it too ;)

26 channels is sounding better :)

Is it just a tenner a month on top of the existing package......Actually.... That's £50pcm for repeats

But if you were already paying up the additional £10 pm for Sky+, and you upgrade to HD, you dont have to pay another £10 on top you previous one as + is free with HD (I think) not bitten the bullet yet

I've been tempted to move from Virgin + to Sky to get the extra HD channels but right now I'm spoiled by being able to record two channels while watching a third.

I've heard that Eurosport are showing the MotoGPs in HD, is this true? as it could be the decider :D

:nono:

Yup that's what they told me.

Well there is a Eurosport HD Channel so looking hopeful ;)

Except there lots of take about Eurosport losing the GP coverage to the rubbish BBC next season... :cuckoo:

The best way to get cheap deals from Sky is to threaten to cancel and make sure you get put through to their retention department (this won't be the first cancellation person you speak to). They will then ask you loads of questions as to why you are leaving, before hitting you with the 'is there anything we can offer you that will make you stay?' question. At this point, mention you are interested in Sky HD, and see what they offer you.

Last time I did this, I got a Sky+ box for £65 (should have been £199 at the time) and 3 months free movies and sports, but it only works if you get put through to their retention team, as they are the only people who are able to do 'deals'!! :D

**** forgot about that :bang:, not much coverage of the 125/250s or qualifying and useless commentators :bang:.

I'm gutted Paul......... I thought we had a "special" relationship :(

I don't even have sky+ at moment

Re the recording 2 channels and watching a 3rd on virgin...... I thought both sky+ and sky HD could both do that

On Sky+ you can record 2 programs at once but whilst they're recording you can only watch one of them or something you've previously recorded

Its criminal it really is.... The BBC sucks big time, and just wait till the date cross with something like international cheese rolling guess which one will be cut?

Eurosport MotoGP coverage axed for 2009

MotoGP

26 June 2008 17:22

British fans will no longer be able to watch the MotoGP world championship on Eurosport after the end of the 2008 campaign.

After many years of successful collaboration, MotoGP rights-holders Dorna Sports announced today in Assen that coverage of the MotoGP World Championships will no longer be available on Eurosport from the 2009 season.

The decision is part of Dorna’s new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences.

This means that in the UK, the BBC will enjoy exclusive coverage of MotoGP next year.

The decision is a blow to Eurosport’s thousands of fans, with the network the only one to show all 125 and 250GP races live.

Commentary duo Toby Moody and Julian Ryder have also developed a huge fan base.

No you don't, you need a Playstation 3, one of the best bluray players on the market and it upscales regular dvds too, I think it plays games as well.

I had sky HD but as i'm not into sport I soon got bored with paying £10 a month for it.

If they drop the £10 charge like they did with sky+ I may give it another go

I agree about the PS3, trouble is I've already got an Xbox 360

Ah the old Betamax VHS war;), looks like Microsoft picked the wrong camp with their HD-DVD add on:bonk:

The 360 upscales DVD's as well if you use HDMI or component leads, or alternatively download HD films from Xbox live!! :D

Feels like I should be, considering the amount I've spent with them over the years!

We got Sky HD a couple of years ago now and it is nice and I am glad the choice is finally growing a bit, got a bit boring watching the BBC HD Preview when we first got it.

get a ps3, it really is ace. psn is free, you can buy a digital tv add on for it, games are starting to show that are good exclusives, there is a download store coming soon(like xbox, but not ikely to crap out due to overheating half way through a film though) and of course it has bluray. new 80gb version out now, and unlike the xboxpleasefixme, you can chuck in a standard laptop HDD if you want to upgrade to proper storage.

STOP IT Matty :nono:

Deep down inside I know I want a PS3 but I keep telling myself that I don't........but I dooooo :(

Is it wrong to have a PS3 AND an Xbox?

EDIT: Apparently it is according to Bev ;) Pah :naughty:

Just explain that they are a sort of digital handbag & you need different types for different TV programmes ;)

PMSL  I like your thinking MrG

MrG nailed it. im gonna try that myself i think when MS make a console that wont break easily

i dont pay an extra £10ppm for sky+, isnt it just an extra outlay for the box and thats it?

whereas skyHD is an outlay for the box + a monthly subscription...

Correct, SkyHD has an additional rental charge, there's no additional subscription for SkyPlus

Is it true that it improves the picture quality of non-HD channels because it upscales? I only have a cheapy LCD TV and it doesn't do a terribly good job of upscaling SD sources.

I don't think so Mark. I can't notice any improvement in standard broadcast with the HD box over my previous Sky+ box

Not noticed any improvement on SD channels, but the up-scaled channels like most of the stuff on Sky1-HD is a good improvement, the true HD stuff still blows it out of the water mind.

NO mate, cos the PS3 plays Blu Ray disks, and is the only player on the market that can do the Blu Ray something or other digital content ooojamflip :) Thats why one will be joining my xbox 360 at some point :)

Excuse me!! :nono: In my defense I have been on at Paul for ages that we should get a PS3!! I have even offered to pay for it, at least the PS3 does a formula one game unlike the XBox 360

sadly codemasters have the licence now, so a gimped version will turn up on ps3, xbox360, DS, Wii, PSP, Iphone, PDA and packets of aftereights. Still, if its as good as Grid then all fine..its gimped, but its still good, that game is excellent. Dont let that influence though, you need a ps3 for full HD BluRay goodness, it doesnt do a bad job at all of upscaling either..

does skyhd not upscale via HDMI? im sure i read it had an option for upscaling?

he he he  I can feel a forum domestic coming on :help:

Perhaps I'd better just buy a PS3 then............

just to keep Bev happy of course :rules: :p ;)

Nah..you don't (well yes you do but) do the maths...lots of free 1080i films from Sky HD free every month or a very few 1080P DVD's per month (assuming you have a Full HD TV)...doesn't compute, as you pay 16-22 squids a pop for a Blu-Ray DVD, whereas you can record a Sky HD movie for nada, zilch..(well you pay for it in your subscription)...but I for one have stopped buying BluRay DVDs entirely and my Christmas pressie (Sony Blu-Ray player) is now mothballed.

Enjoy
jamie

So what do you do when you HD box is full of films:shrug:

Whoa!

People pay £50/month to watch satellite TV?!
