just got myself an SB-800 flash

- Turn to 1/1 power
- point head at yourself
- hit test button
- never repeat

I talk from experience with my SB600, yes.
Pretty sure that it lists those steps in the manual, though?

Hope you've got some batteries :D

Congratulations

Use it on iTTL for now, manual can be daunting,...

I think the SB800 has strobing, could be a bit of fun that!

 ;)

Just to be difficult, I'm going to say the opposite.

On manual, you know exactly how bright the light will be because it doesn't change. If you want it bright, set it bright. If you want it dark, set it dark. If you use it on auto, however, you never quite know what setting the camera will choose.

The only reason it seems confusing is because it's an LCD display and they express the brightness in numbers. If it was a big dial with "bright" written on one side and "dark" written on the other, it would seem like the simplest thing in the world. All you have to remember is that 1/1 equals bright and 1/128 equals dark.

Simple.

is the saying "fill flash" a setting or is it just a discription??

A very good buy DT ... You will have fun with it ... it is super versatile ... ;)

The Fill Flash setting on the SB 800 is TTL BL ... and it does just what it says on the tin ...

You could do worse than buy the Magic Lantern Guide to Nikon's Speedlite System ... makes it all seem very easy in the (real world) end imo ... :D

Magic Lantern Guide

:p

Ven, weren't you supposed to be at the flash workshop tonight in Stevenage?

I got one for my birthday back in November and still haven't figured out how it works properly  Give me another year or so and I'll let you know
