Hi all

I just got my first DSLR for Christmas and I love it. I know nothing about photography really and all the things like ISO really go over my head, I have a small grasp on them though.

So far just using the camera in auto or the scene settings.

Here are some shots I have taken. Apologies as most are my dogs as they are my closest subject to use

Hi Weezawoo :)
Welcome to TP .... I'm sure you'll find all the help you need here as they are a great set of people - very friendly and helpful :)
The images are good for your first time with a DSLR :) Love the images of the dogs - 3 & 4 are my favourites there. I would also crop the window out of the image of the love ornament but that is my personal opinion :) But great shots :)
Keep taking photographs and learning as you go along - as I am doing through this site :)

Whoah! Go easy on the photos.
Posting too many in one thread makes it difficult to comment on them, especially as they're not numbered.
Not too important in this case as you've not asked for feedback but something to bear in mind when you do.
One bit of crit I have is that the one where the two dogs look like they're about to attack each other is quite horrible, they're probably only playing but it doesn't show them at their best. ;)

Looks like you're having fun with it, technically they're not too good but that doesn't matter at the moment, you need to get used to the camera.
Forget using it in auto/sport/portrait modes, all that will teach you to do is get things in the viewfinder, you won't learn any of the technical aspects which will help you compose shots.
Read up on here and have a play with the semi-auto modes, aperture priority and shutter priority and see how changing them affects how the shots look.
What DSLR did you get by the way?

The one of them playing was only as I was quite impressed it managed to not blur indoors :) sorry still getting used to a better camera than my phone one!

The camera I have is the pentax k-30 with the 18-55mm lens looking at finding another lens to add some extra zoom but I will do that when I get used to everything :)

I joined here hoping I can get just general advice to teach me how to actually use the camera as I would have no idea what settings to change to make pictures better. I have been having a little play with the manual focus and its great fun I just never knew I could control what I actually focus on!

Sorry about the amount of pics :/

Oh and I only realized I can crop on the camera after I put them onto my ipad. I don't have a laptop with any photo programs, the only thing I have access to is coreldraw at work but I am off until 2nd jan so can't crop without loosing quality on my ipad or phone. But I do agree with the window :)

download a free image suite like GIMP or PICASA 3

both have some useful tools for image maniulation and cropping

Cropping on your ipad is no different to cropping on you computer. I find the ipad is a great tool for quick edits. Snapseed is a great app for this.

I will try them! I just though that it would save it in lower quality so wanted to try not to crop! I'm so rubbish with technology!

I am waiting on a memory card reader for the ipad to make it easier to get pictures on here. At the moment I put it in my phone upload to Dropbox then download to the ipad! Such a palava :(
