I just got myself a Nikon F801 film SLR with a Nikon 35-70mm F3.3-5.6 lens.

I have previously been digital only before wanting to experiment.

Question: On the above lens, I swing the aperture ring round to f/3.3 but the camera only reads it as f/4. This is both on the 801 and my D700. Am i missing something here?

Probably basic camera knowledge [in the 801 manual on the increments of f stop values it misses 3.3 and 3.5 out. Would I need to set at f/4 and exposure comp for 1/3 stop increments?

Cant wait to get some black and white film today anyway :D

Is this at 35mm? F3.3 will only be achievable at 35mm and a little longer I would think.

I tried it at both ends, obviously I didnt expect to see 3.3 or 3.5 at 70mm but thought I would fine it somewhere.

Im slightly puzzled unless the aoerture ring doesnt quite catch in the 3.3 area.

Its very odd that it does it on the D700 too. It suggests that there is something wrong with the lens.

Thats what I thought.

Im not fussed either way, i normally use primes but this thing is about the size of a 35mm prime and is something to sling in the case for holidays.

Its not worth repairing, still works well through the rest of the range.

I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that the readout on the F801 only worked in full stops, though the lens did stop down and work properly.

Edit: yep - here - about a page down ... Author: R.M Sato

I saw that, its what lead me to think I might be able to get it to pick up with compensation or something, shouldnt have an issue on the 700 though?!

Thank you for your help. Im not that fussed, the film camera is just for messing around with really. Going to have a proper look tonight and see if I can get things moving.

I have an F801S and with my 35-70mm on I can dial in F3.3 in both A,S P* and M modes so you may have a slight error on your lens or the F801 body may be different in some way.
