My wife recently asked me to print some photographs for her mother who was entering a competition at a local womans rural group. The subject was water. I emailed some shots, one of which was a sunset taken in Oban a few months ago and it was pretty naff (not good enough for the forum, compared to a lot of the landscapes I've seen posted).

Anyhow, she won first prize :1st: with it (I think she got half a dozen scones and a bottle of elderberry wine) and some old woman asked for a copy so she could frame it and hang it in her living room.

Just goes to show you, what we consider as photographers to be less than technically perfect or even acceptable, may well be appealing to others. Matter of taste I suppose. To think of one of my pics hanging in some old biddys living room seems to make it kinda worthwhile.

I have to be honest I do not consider myself a photographer, but in answer to your post, do the people who look at these things do it from a technical angle or just from a like it or not/ thats pretty side of things. Photography seems to split into various sectors those who strive for technical excellence , those who attempt to capture a moment or event and those who work on an image. I am still not sure about the PS side of it all as in my book thats not the image that was viewed its the image thats been worked on.However, you have achieved a first prize sort of by proxy but hey its a first prize, Regards Jim

Cheers Jim. You are right.

I'd say anyone who takes photographs, enjoys the activity and the results is a photographer, regardless of how good they are technically. Like golf there can be a bit of snobbery involved (not on this forum too much - all seem very helpful).

The thing to consider in the processing of digital images is it is just a modern way of doing what was/is done in dark rooms, to get a desired result. Yeh, its much more flexible and that in itself is a form of art.

A win is a win - nice one

This indicates to me another example of what I've thought for a while - the difference between 'photography' and 'taking pictures'. The first tends to be done by enthusiasts/professionals in the hope of peer respect and technical proficiency, and the second is done by (probably) everybody for memory-recording and aesthetic pleasure. Both are equally satisfying, of course, but the latter is, I suspect, more likely to end up on the wall or mantelpiece of the person on the street.

No No. They just had to present any photo, not necessarily one taken themselves. I don't go to womens rurals (very often), so I didn't see any others.
