I have had my Nikon D60 for a few years now, and this was with the idea of really getting into photography. But I have had it stuck away in a cupboard for years, only since taking early retirement have I decided to get the Nikon out, and have another look at it.

I have been playing with the camera for a good few months now, but I am just wondering is it a little to basic a camera. Should I learn on this, or would anyone recommend I upgrade to something better?

The D60 is a great camera to learn with, it's where I started and I still have it for when I want to travel light.

Spend some time with it learning about shutter speeds, aperture and ISO and find out if you really do like photography. If you do it will be a while before you feel the camera is the limiting factor and at that point you'll be in a better position to know if an upgrade will give you what you want.

I learnt with a d60 which was great, I'd stick with it unless a D90 come up cheap and you really want a few more functions like bracketing and a top sited display (like I did)

I'm learning on a d40 at the moment. I used to take photos a long time ago for a holiday camp but forgot everything I had learned so it's back to basics for me. I choose the Nikon range because it's so easy to learn and handle . If you are happy with the d60 I would stick with it until you have learnt everything you can with this camera and are completely happy using all the features and then move on. At the end of the day it is your choice. Hope this helps .

Thanks for the advice, I really do want to learn more. I will get out and about, and see what I can do with it...Thanks

Thanks guys I will persevere a little more ;)

put it this way, if you can't take decent photos with a D60 it's not the camera at fault, don't think buying a better camera will automatically give you better shots :)

Yes I suppose you are right, I was thinking of buying a new car, you see my driving is not that good, and if I buy a better car, my driving will improve..

Only joking of course  lol

The nikon 35 mm 1.8 was a great lens to get for the d60 btw!

I don't think I will get any more lenses just yet, I will stay with the couple I have at the moment. You never know, I may change the camera at a later date.

I use a D60 as well and i think it is a really nice camera (although my exposure to more equiped cameras is limited). I think as a beginner you are better off learning on the more 'basic' models and look at possibly getting a wider arreay of lens, such as wide angle, macro, or what ever suits your style better

I am trying to use it everyday, and see what I can do with it. I want to get the hang of doing people and street photos. Only for my own self interest.

But who knows, I may get a surprise on my birthday, someone may buy me a new camera :)

Try and learn as much as you can from the camera you have already rather than be tempted by an upgrade. My first DSLR was a D50 which I used to death and could use with my eyes shut! I then upgraded to a D80, which I loved even more but then the upgrade bug bit me and I jumped to a D300s.
Although the D300s is a fantastic camera, I actually missed my D80 and never really got to understand the D300s features completely and in a way, regretted my decision to upgrade. I think my photography also suffered as I was reluctant to use the camera and only last week, I finally traded my D300s for a D200 (which is more similar in features to a D80) and now really looking forward to getting out and about again to take pictures.
So......moral of the story: be happy with what you've got :-)

I am happy with the D60, but I also like getting newer items every so often. I will keep with my current camera for a little while yet.

A friend of mine used to buy the latest camera that came out, he was always upgrading. He used to tell me, the latest one does this that and the other. I used to say, but you said that about the last one :cuckoo:

The Nikon D60 is my first DSLR, so I have never been guilty of chasing camera numbers ;)

I will keep my little D60, and I will keep using it every day, or nearly every day. I will continue to do this till it breaks. When it does break I will then go out and purchase another camera.
