which will probably get me shot down in flames / slapped / abused / spoken to in stern tones by those whose names are in green.............

however.........

There appear to be quite a few threads lately loosely along the lines of "I have recently bought CS5, but am new to photography and picture editing, so how do I use it / what do i do? I have no idea etc....." - top tip - all adobe products have a very useful help page, and there are a plethora of tutrorials aailable on TP, and on alternative websites.......... ;)

Just got me thinking  (yeah i know!) .......... of all the different photo editing software "solutions :gag:" out there - if Gimp can be likened to a Renault Clio, then CS5 is firmly at the Aston Martin end of the scale, (CS3 now a high spec 3 series) so if you are new to photography / image editing etc etc and assuming not all students / teachers etc then why would you spend £600+ on some software that you have absolutely no idea how to use? Surely you would try something a bit lower down the scale first, get comfortable and then upgrade if necessary - i.e. not many people buy a 1D Mk III or Nikon D3blah for their first DSLR? or spend more on the editing software than they do on the camera or pc?????????:shrug::shrug:

Of course I have my suspicions about the "provenance" of many of these and if my suspicions were to be upheld, I certainly wouldn't be shouting it from the rooftops..........

Are you suggesting that people may have acquired some sort of extended trial version?? The very thought!! :whistling:

To be fair to people who may actually have bought the thing, if you are getting into photography and want to edit images, which photo editing software have you heard of?

You've spend a lot of money on state of the art camera gear, which state of the art photo editor are you going to choose?

I take your basic point though- I have learnt everything I know about Photoshop from just trying stuff. I have still only scratched the surface of it mind, and I've earmarked lots of the tutorials on here to have a play with later.

Dude, I know you can't get out on the golf course, but surely there are better things to be worrying about. ;)

What an assumption / allegation to make Chris......:naughty:

I agree to an extent, but using your analogy further...

When i bought my first car, my dad advised id be much better off getting a Renault Clio than an aston martin, cos if i needed to find a new wing mirror there were plenty of breakers yards to find one, not quite the same if id gone with an Aston Martin. It was also a lot easier to find someone (there was no net back then lol) to ask how to change the clutch, or yeah ive fixed a leaky radiator on a clio before type conversations. Buying an Aston on my 17th birthday would have proved just damn right silly, so i decided on a clio instead (think it was actually an Astra but you get my drift)

I dont think photoshop is about the money, but purely the wealth of support available.
Of course the ease of not parting with cash to use it plays in the hands of adobe too, its a no lose situation for them.

Therefore id kind of liken photoshop more to the Clio than an Aston Martin.

lost me on that one, Ben.

Sorry.

Doesn't everyone know a teacher or student?.. and whats wrong with Clio's?

Unfortunately not!

I think that Photoshop is just so well known AND always seems to be claimed as the best that people think it must be what they need. How many programmes have their name become a verb, I can just think of two at present, google and photoshop.

It is good because, as has already been said there is so much support available for it and if you want to do something you just do a web search and can invariably find a tutorial on whatever it is you are trying to do - there are not that many programmes have have this.

Sorry.

i just mean that the reason everyone goes straight to photoshop is because of the wealth of help, tutorials, support that is available.

Ask a question on a forum like this about gimp or paintshop, you might get a few replies, ask a question about photoshop, you'll get 1000 replies.
