After posting up a thread about my next move in terms of lens strategy, I started putting money to one side to save up for a second hand Canon 24-70 f2.8L

But after doing some research, it turns out that I could get the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD new on interest free credit. Thereby giving me 10 more months of use for no extra outlay.

Bearing in mind I'm not a pro, and many reviews I've seen say the Canon is better, but only marginally and if it's your own money, go for the Tamron, is this a good buy at £699?

 
Ive had the Tamron, its about 6-7 years ago now, I thought it a good lens, for the price. I've not had the Canon 24-70L but I have had a few L lenses, notably the 70-200L F4 and the 24-105L f4 and for me they were demonstrably better lenses.

What value do you put on having Canon on the lens ? Aftermarket lenses are very good these days , Go for it , as said " I'm no professional "
 
The Canon EF 24-70mm ƒ/2.8L is a brilliant lens, optically fantastic, but it's heavy for a walkabout lens, so I opted for the 24-105 f4 with the extra reach.
I had one as a loan for two weeks whilst my 24-105 was in for repair. I haven't tried the Tamron.
 
I've had exactly that lens and liked it.
I sold it on due to lack of use as I just use primes normally.
reach isn't great but that's what you get for f/2.8
otherwise I was very happy with it.
the canon one does not have IS so that makes a difference, esp for home movies of family etc.
The canon will be better, I say this simply because of focusing accuracy under tricky conditions based upon typical performance. I have nothing empirical to share though.
however, I did have both the canon and tamron in my hands for a couple of days once.

I took some hand held shots of my blinds, so okay light, at f/2.8 and I couldn't really tell them apart.
I would think that for pro use, go with the canon for reliability and durability.
For your own use, then the tamron is great.
Also I had the first version. I presume that the newer one is even better.

I don't, really. I was looking at SH v new and the ii version of the Canon is still £400 more expensive SH than the Tamron new. I've looked at example images and while there is a difference at the extremes, I couldn't really see £1,000 worth of difference (for a new one). Certainly, for the type of shots I take, I couldn't really justify it. Plus, the Tamron has IS (or VC) so that was also a factor.

Anyway..too late now. Clicked the button and the Tamron should be coming my way in the next day or so.

It was more a case of someone coming along and saying "FFS don't buy that lens, it's dreadful"

Do you mean the mk1 or mk2?

The mk 1 is a dog as far as I'm concerned.
 
It is the MK1 I've just ordered.

Most reviews are extremely positive of fully working lenses, but it looks like the QC might not be up to scratch as most of the negative reviews involve lenses that didn't work properly.
 
I had the Tamron 24-70 VC on my 5d3 for a couple of years and whilst yes the Canon was slightly better, at my level it wasn't that noticeable. I would say probably about 90% of the performance (at half the price). Good enough for me anyway, I also had the 70-200 f2.8 VC. My only comment would be that it is rather large for a walkabout lens, I now much prefer primes
 
Any f2.8 zoom lens is going to be sizeable. :)

Hope you enjoy your lens when it arrives. I suppose distance selling regulations mean that you could return it within 14 days if you change your mind. Personally i wouldn't bother with f2.8, but that's my opinion.
 
Well I'm having some fun with this.

Got an email yesterday telling me it had been delivered and signed for. As I'd asked for it to be left with a neighbour, I clicked on the map to see where they'd left it.

I didn't recognise the street, so I zoomed out a bit only to find it's gone to an address in Scotland, despite me living in High Wycombe.

UK Mail is blaming Jessops and Jessops haven't got back to me yet. I was hoping to have it for the weekend.

Isn't there a Jessops store in High Wycombe?
 
Turns out there is - but then I didn't have many options for delivery as buying on finance meant it had to go to the same address as the finance agreement.

I normally get stuff delivered to work as we have 24 hour security and there's always someone to sign for it.
