This has been chipping away at what's left of my mind for a little while...

Does anyone else think the "Show us yer film shots then" thread is a voracious, out of control monster that devours photos.

Should I crawl back into my hole?

You are of course free to start a new thread in "Photos from Film" but I guess that is not very active. It's a compromise, a busy, active thread where you get likes but not much else or a quiet backwater where you may get a more considered critique but you may not get much at all.

"Photos from Film"

THere is a film crotoque thread in place and although it does get posts and replies / critique, it is no where near as actibe as show as yer film shots

Flippin eck how many typos!!! sod it I can't be a**ed editing it…. you all know what i mean anyway...dont you??!!:D

It is a monster but if you have just the odd picture or two then its quite good. You also see what other people have been doing.

Yes, I agree that it is good for that, but it seems to have become so much more.

Just a thought.

Well I thought it was some sort of Franglais o_O Anyway I would have thought "show us your film shots" encourages newbies esp if they get a like.

Do you honestly think anyone is going to admit to that?

I drop a few shots in there now and again but haven't for a while. Infact, aside from sharing now and again on Instagram, I don't really post my photos anywhere anymore. Recently got a little wine again but I am still rebuilding content for it.

I do see what you mean though about that thread, but I do enjoy going to one place to see what everyone is taking. I think part of the problem is that there is a forum for 'photos from film'. The majority of the Talk Photography forum visitors are digital photographers so would probably choose not to visit that sub forum I imagine, therefore they will only attract a small percentage of the visitors here. The other option? Start a post in the other photo sharing forums which are open to C&C and attract comments such as, "not bad, for film" etc.

So who cares about critique and likes ?
Nobody posts in the SUYours with the expectation of crit I wouldn't imagine, so...its for likes or exposure, or both, or neither...I dunno.

I absolutely agree with the points made in this thread about it being a bit of a black hole thing, but that's its nature.
It is going to pull pictures that would normally be posted in a crit forum, but you can't have it all ways.
I suspect if there wasn't an SUY thread here in the film section, less pictures would be posted, its a look and leave thing and unfortunately for the crit section....more popular.
I dunno if it would be better in the long term to dump it or not, but there needs to be a receptacle outside the formality and expectation of the crits, proof of that is its popularity.
I guess fusty crusty, not for the first time, is just not running the same lines as TPF as a whole.

The alternative is, make your own thread in F&C, cutting SUY is not going to drive pictures to crit, to force them ie - cut SUY and ban picture threads in F&C, will mean less picture posting, so its a bit of a catch 22.

Mebbe, moving the thread out of F&C and in to crit could be a halfway house, it has to keep its look and leave no expectation character though, apart from the greater exposure of F&C, its why its so popular ???
It might not drive pictures to crit, but at least they'll be playing on the same pitch.

I dunno...:)

The guy who started it i.e. Grant is he still around....also there was a thread where you post shots that had something to do with the previous post...h'mm that died off.

F & C is a lagoon of sensibleness so it would be a shame to move threads out of here. It also saves having to go out there...

Some excellent points well made.

Maybe create a new thread called “Critique my film shot” or something? That way, while I’m sure it would still attract some commentless likes, it would also essentially announce to people on the forum that the person posting the photo is actively seeking some critique.

h'mm if we can all agree with any criticism ;)

Already got it, its in the crit section
Do you propose to move that to here ?

Personally it is very rare that I post photos for critique…...If people "like" them or mention an opinion then fair enough but I post to share, and not purposely to receive feedback.

If that was the only option, I doubt that I would post many, if any at all.

It's interesting that the focus is moving towards crit. I hadn't thought about that.

I guess there are two options: Encourage more people to use the Photos from Film section of the forum, or; have a thread in Film and Conventional that will attract more traffic by default.

I’m not suggesting either as a better option, but given the relatively low footfall in Photos from Film (albeit with generally better levels of feedback) then it can be frustrating if you are seeking critique, but no one looks at your phots for weeks.

Having a single general critique thread in here might be the best of both worlds.

I think that (from my point of view) I often post in there to say 'I took this with camera X on film y and with lens z' so basically just to give people an idea of what they can expect from one of the many choices that we have in the film section. If they are liked all good, if not meh! not bovvered.
I do like the thread as it certainly gives a lot of info about kit and about places that might be nice to visit. It is bloody huge mind.:D

I really like that (SUY) thread. I always read the posts with interest, and occasionally comment a bit. It's really good to see the kinds of things others are doing. Some folk's work has been a real inspiration. I'm thinking for example of colour rock detail shots from @Kevin Allan and the fantastic black and white shots from @simon ess of apparently mundane subjects (just two that spring to mind). I know I'm as guilty as many of us of just clicking a Like button, and I also know it can be disappointing to post there and just get a couple of Likes, or nothing, but I think the thread is useful and valuable nevertheless. TBH I've just looked at a few threads in the Photos from Film section, and critique there is also pretty much non-existent, more or less "I really like no 3". I go there very rarely, though I know I should do so more.

Maybe one way to use the SUY thread is to put a set on the PfF section, with a taster and link in SUY?

OTOH I remember a discussion on critique somewhere on here, someone saying they don't bother to critique a set, only a single image that specifically asks for critique. There's probably no right way. If SUY wasn't working it wouldn't stay on the front page and have as many posts as it has!

I like the SUY thread, it's got regular traffic and it's all in one place, rather than diluted and scattered by the four winds into numerous separate threadlets. OK, photos will be looked at and disappear into the page archives, but isn't that what happens with our negatives and digital image files anyway? My computer must have hundreds of photos from film in the 'photos' folder, but how often do I go through them all and look at them after the initial few days novelty of cooing over the odd fairly nice one has worn off?

As I see it, we have the FPOTY comp to keep us on our toes (as time and opportunity allows) and to enjoy seeing other people's photos; we have the SUY thread to regularly enjoy viewing and to add to as we get another batch of photos back from the lab; and we have the New Old Film Challenge to encourage us to look through our archives for something that might fit the subject (when someone can get round to posting the next subject for it, that is! *cough*).

So I think we've got all but the crit aspect covered in house, and there's always the thread on the 'other place' for that. So do we need to do anything differently? If it ain't broke... (y)
