Hi All,

This is just a rant. Nothing productive really, but only have an hour left at work!

Anyway, I set off for South Africa over a month ago (beginning of July). Okay, it's only a £45 Tripod, but it was doing the job for what I needed.

However, I couldn't use it for the entire holiday because it had been broken.

Over 4 weeks later arriving back in the UK, i still have had no response from them regarding whether or not they will replace it as I shouldn't have to pay my insurance excess for something they broke in flight.

I've tried calling but the line ALWAYS goes into answerphone.
Emailed several times, and sent several letters.

I was really looking forward to trying tome HDR shots and want my tripod back!!

:)

I can't help feeling there's part of the story missing here ;)

If you bought something which doesn't work correctly or isn't of the expected quality the vendor should respect your consumer rights and rectify the concern with the minimum of delay.

If the item was broken through an act of neglect on the part of the airline or it's baggage handlers and can be proved such, you have the right of compensation from them, if they've not responded to emails and telephone calls a letter sent to their head office by recorded delivery asking for written response within 7 days should be your next step.

As I understand it..... amnesia went for a break/holiday/work in S.Africa and had his tripod broken in transit by who ever. In trying to get reparation for said damage has been told that he should claim via his own insurance (not through the airline) and to do this he must pay an insurance excess. To my mind the Airline is being negligent and is liable...... but that's only if I got the story correct! I, too, would rant..... it's their fault - not his!

I don't think it's something he has bought from S.Africa, it's something he took that he already owned.....

Sorry to rad about your predicament amnesia.

South Africa is rife with these stories. I had a Nikon CoolPix compact camera stolen from inside my suitcase when in transit to Johannesburg. While I was waiting for my baggage to come off the belt - I wondered (naively) why 90% of the suitcases and bags were wrapped in cellophane. When I got to my hotel room, sadly I discovered why.

However, my issue is that as I was traveling on behalf of a client - their insurance didn't cover me at all for this loss, they said that a compact camera was not needed for the business for which I was traveling and that therefore it was not covered. I hadn't thought of contacting the airline - probably too late to do anything about it now though.

Well, last night I tried to contact their customer services in Dubai (which is their head office)! I managed to get through to someone and they then gave me another telephone number (which is for a London office).
The london office told me it hasn't been 4 weeks since they received my first LETTER... I should be expecting a response in the first week of September.

If I have not heard anything, I must call back at the end of the first week in September!

What a cheek.

And yes, Chuckles does have it right... I took some equipment, already belonging to me (it was a holiday) and they broke it.

On the way back, my baggage never got loaded onto the plane! So lost my clothes for 4 days.

The joys of flying.

My suitcase was smashed on a trip last year,

I walked in to the airline complaints office, told them I was buying a new one and they would be paying for it.

I spent 200 euros on a new Samsonite case (sweet) and got the money back in around 2 or 3 weeks.

WW.

Well I heard back from Emirates today. They will not be replacing my Tripod. They said it is not their fault and they take no liability whatsoever.

I called them about it and they said I must put my complaints in writing! But I've already done that! Apparently I need to do it again, and the VERY rude operator said "But I bet they won't pay out... shame isn't it" - sarcastic son of a .....!!

Now I'm officially peeved!

Is 'peeved' up or down from 'rant' status?

That's just not good at all..... Sometimes a telephone is a 'one way device' They know they're big and they think you can't touch them! :(

Peeved is a step up from rant, but on a different set of balancing beams!

Okay, I don't know what that's supposed to mean.. but basically, I'm annoyed - but I'm going to put it down to write another letter and just put it down to experience, otherwise it will just eat away at me.

Hmm, now - to chose a new Tripod :D

just a thought, would it be covered by
a) household insurance
b) photo insurance
c) travel insurance

Household insurance is an excess of £50, this is more than the Tripod is worth.

Photo insurance is a no, because it wasn't with me when it was broken (it was in transit with the airline).

Travel insurance give me the same bull my Photo insurance do...
