you don't write photo' instead of photo.

So, please stop writing photo's.

It's photos.

What about "should of" instead of "should've" or even "should have"! :) That annoys me

The country is going to the dogs when people can't even spell or use grammar correctly!
 
On a bit of a tangent but whilst we are on grammar.
I had a go at one of the lads I work with, not only does it write complete garbage on facebook but his use of the english language and his gammar are a disgrace.
He is currentlyy trying to get into the army, I will be amazed if he gets through any of the entry tests, or maybe he is the perfect grunt?

I however, am going to use photo's simply to be annoying. Now...back to editing those photo's.
 
To be honest I often struggle with spelling and grammar to the point where I often have to use a spell checker I never seem to know if I'm supposed to use an apostrophe or not, thank you for pointing out a mistake that I must make quite often I don’t feel at all foolish or humiliated.
 
Spellcheckers are useless for checking spelling. Look at how many people don't know the difference between "loose" and "lose" and "should have" and "should of". A spellchecker won't correct those.
 
I don't want to be drawn too deeply into this discussion, but some people would be correct more often than not if they decided never to use an apostrophe again. I think a missing apostrophe grates less than an incorrect one. Just sayin' ...
 
There was no standard spelling in English until the C19th, and the rules of grammar were pretty loose too. These continue to change.

I try to write clearly and correctly, and I know how to use apostrophes, but I still make mistakes when I'm in a hurry or writing on a forum which is pretty informal. When I was at school - back in the "old days" - we were taught to punctuate abbreviations, so we ended up by addressing a letter to Mr. John Smith, BSc., PhD., and so on IIRC. Thankfully that nonsense has gone now, and the apostrophe will follow it into oblivion, with any luck.

More than that. This is actually the fourth thread.

So Kevin, whilst I understand and sympathise with your feelings about spelling and grammar, the ratio of spelling complaints to total posts [ 4/18 ] isn't going to endear you to a large proportion of our members.

Mostly those who cannot spell.
 
dont be silly. everyone know's the only time's you use an apostrophe i's when there's an 's' at the end of word's :shrug:

Possesive rather than plural so photo's is correct. When describing attributes of multiple photos you would write photos' ;)

I don't get why people care so little about their written communications skills and actually look down on people that do care. What is it about the British that makes us proud to be dumb and seen to be dumb? I certainly make mistakes, I try not to make the same one more than once if it is pointed out to me.

The "some people have English as a second language" argument holds no water. I know plenty of people that are not native English speakers, not one of them resents having their spelling or grammar corrected. The attitude universally adopted is "if no-one tells me when I'm making a mistake, how will I ever learn?" Many native English speakers seem uninterested in learning. :(

So everyone knows, I loathed English at school, just about scraped a pass in Language 'O' level and failed Literature. I chose 'A' level subjects that did not require essays as I would rather write a computer program than a sentence.

Yet there's an example where correct syntax is vital, but you know when you've done wrong and there's little lee-way, if any.
